[Bug 601243] New: OOo has issues while saving the files, and even crashes, after updating Java Runtime.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=601243 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=601243#c0 Summary: OOo has issues while saving the files, and even crashes, after updating Java Runtime. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: OpenOffice.org AssignedTo: bnc-team-ooo@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: publio.escipion.el.africano@gmail.com QAContact: cwei@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=358041) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=358041) error report file due to a fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment 6.0_17-b17 x86_64 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; es-ES; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 SUSE/3.5.9-0.1.1 Firefox/3.5.9 I have updated my SO with these very new updates from repo-update: java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.6.0.0_b17-2.1.1.x86_64.rpm java-1_6_0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0_b17-2.1.1.x86_64.rpm systemtap-0.9.9_1.0-2.4_1.1.1.x86_64.delta.rpm systemtap-runtime-0.9.9_1.0-2.4_1.1.1.x86_64.delta.rpm timezone-2010h-1.1.1.x86_64.rpm After that, I began to notice that Dolphin is less responsive, and that OOo (which has been troubleless since April 12th, 2010) began to crash. It began when I hightlighted a word to italicize it: OOo Writer crashed. The document was not recovery although it should be. I rewrote it. I saved it. With my own eyes I saw the file in Dolphin: niños.odt. I continued writing and I saved it again after a while. Then I got the following message that warned me that there was a problem: "Error al guardar el doumento niños: /media/1024HD-02/niños.odt no existe." ("Error saving the document niños: /media/1024HD-02/niños.odt doesn't exist.") It was followed by the next one: "Error al guardar el documento niños: Error al crear. No se puede crear una copia de seguridad." ("Error saving the document niños: Error at the time of create it. It was not possible to create a backup copy.") I looked at Dolphin: It was right: niños.odt was not there any more. After useless attempts, I used the option "Save as...". It worked. But after a while writing, I saved it again and I got the following message: "El archivo fue modificado después de que lo abriera para la edición en OpenOffice.org. Guardar su versión del documento destruirá los cambios realizados por otros. ¿Quiere guardar su versión igualmente? Guarda igualmente / Cancelar." ("The file was modified after you opened it for edit it with OpenOffice.org. Saving your version of the document will destroy the changes made by others Do you want to save? Save/Cancel.") Which others? No one. What other program has opened and changed the file? None. So, I chose to save. Amen. But the above situation repeated again, and again, and again... (even the disappearance of the previously saved file). I also got the following messages when attempting to Save/Save as...: "El proceso para el protocolo file terminó inesperadamente." ("The process for protocol file unexpectedly finished.") and: "La carpeta especificada no existe o no pudo ser leída." ("The specified folder doesn't exist or it couldn't be read.") That statement is false. Also, I got (I get) crashes. As I thought that this issues were related with KDE 4 integration, first I tried to change my saving preferences, so OOo dialogs were used instead of KDE 4's. It does not work. Under debugging, OOo missbehaves as above, but crashes are more frequent than saving issues. Out of debugging, saving issues are more frequent than crashes. I have been having troubles with OOo since 11.2 was released (see bugs 577579, 558250, 558253, 571373). I have previously noticed that OOo changes its behavior after some updates: the frequency of the issues I have reported some times increases, and some times decreases (they even disappear), without any explanation except that I have updated my system (it is what is changed). But before that I never had a so close and obvious relation between my OOo issues and the updates (Java). I suppose that I will have to downgrade Java. But I thought that I should do it after sending this. N. B.: As I stated on comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=577579#c23, I have two OOo installations, each one in a different computer. One of them lacks of certain packages and a files, as it was suggested me previously. Another is untouched. Since more than 30 days both OOo worked fine. I have debugged using the second one. Thank you. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Update Java from repo-update. 2.Run OOo Writer. 3.Just write and save. Actual Results: Issues saving and crashes. Poor recovery (or not at all). See above. Expected Results: To save, no crashes, and if crashes, then a good recovery. # # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007fffee1c1265, pid=13865, tid=140737353873168 # # JRE version: 6.0_17-b17 # Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (14.0-b16 mixed mode linux-amd64 ) # Derivative: IcedTea6 1.7.3 # Distribution: Custom build (Mon Apr 12 15:03:54 UTC 2010) # Problematic frame: # C [libQtCore.so.4+0x159265] _ZN11QMetaObject8activateEP7QObjectiiPPv+0x505 # # An error report file with more information is saved as: # /tmp/hs_err_pid13865.log # # If you would like to submit a bug report, please include # instructions how to reproduce the bug and visit: # http://icedtea.classpath.org/bugzilla # Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I can hell, but I don't feel responsible. Moreover, while I cannot figure out much from the backtraces from comment #8 the one thing I can see is that KDE code is first encountered only after there's a 'continue' following the first crash. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=601243 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=601243#c12 --- Comment #12 from Rainer Hurtado Navarro <publio.escipion.el.africano@gmail.com> 2010-05-03 19:50:04 UTC --- A fact: Whether this issue is produced by Qt or by Java, you might discuss it, but in the computer in which Java has not been updated, OOo has not this issue. When I got the comment #9 I told myself: "Lets blame Qt now..." (at the sight of the line that states "libQtCore.so.4" etc.) and I felt bad, because I, a user that was re-writing his lost document and doing some debug work till 3 a. m., was pointed out that I did not read carefully the Java's error report file that stated it was a problem with some Qt library function. In fact, I didn't read the report file when I submitted it because, although it certainly was 3 a. m., I don't know more than to follow your suggestions. I only knew that this issue followed the installation of the Java x86_64 update, that this conflicting issue with Qt (as I was pointed then), even being a Qt problem and not a Java problem, was not present before the update, and that with a non-updated Java, OOo works "fine" (in this case, "fine" does not really mean fine, but that there is no more abnormalities in the behavior of the new OOo than those I am already used to and of which I have learned to manage to use OOo). You also might turn this problem to the KDE team or to the OOo team, and back again, but I am afraid that every one that had installed the new Java will have a working-less OOo: the users are those that will be disappointed. In my particular case, I am looking forward to 11.3, but I am not quite sure about it. I am a SuSE user since 7.0, and I know that there will always be some problems that will require some workaround, each of them with its particular degree of work. But I had never had, till 11.2, so fragile SuSE (not as OS, but as a collection of applications). Since 2001, when I bought SuSE 8.1 Professional, I do not play around, shifting between Linux distributions. I did not that when the Ubuntu crisis. But lately, due to a long list of bugs that makes me unpleasant my experience with this particular version of SuSE, I tried Fedora 12. But I can not find myself using Fedora, as I can not find myself using Gnome, however I profoundly dislike how KDE 4 is gnomeized, or how immature is Dolphin in comparison with KDE's Konqueror, or how bold is KDE 4's Konqueror in comparison with KDE 3.5's Konqueror. As many other people, I am a SuSE user, and I am a KDE user, and I would like you think over that when you took the bugs: the user that submit you a bug not only wants a working application or functionality; mostly he wants a better, an improved, distribution; mostly he wants to enforce the reason by which he have chosen one instead another. Of course, there are futile reasons, such as that the color theme is liked or not (for instance, I dislike the look and feel of those SuSE versions that have green themes), but I am not talking about these futile reasons. That is why, while you are looking for who is responsible, I simply downgraded Java in order to continue working. I am tired: there is a long list of bugs I am concerned, some solved, but most of them unsolved or unsatisfactorily solved, and at this point I do not know if you ever planned to solve them for 11.2. I sincerely hope that 11.3 be better. Do not let us down. That is that when I use the KDE's Open/Save dialogs through OOo at the time of Open/Save, respectively, and at the same time, prior I choose any file, I open Dolphin in whatever location, the folder contents are not displayed by Dolphin and the process of recovery the directory list by it seems to be blocked. The contents of the directory are displayed just after I close the Open/Save dialog in OOo (after chosen any file or not). However, Bug 571373, on the OOo search dialog the user can't introduce a new work to search or to replace easily, is still present, but not at the same degree of hardening. Also, the Search box still "flicks" when chosen "More Options" before it be expanded stably. On issue referred as Bug 601243, OOo has issues while saving the files, and even crashes, after updating Java Runtime, I can not tell you yet. I have already updated OOo in my laptop (no debuginfo packages here), but I have not upgraded Java there. I am going to updated OOo (plus its debuginfo packages) in my desktop computer, in which I have just upgraded Java (plus its debuginfo packages). It is going to take some time... Rainer, could you please get a strace log? The steps are described at http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:OOo#How_to_get_strace_log
It might be related to the bug #603316. Unfortunately, the problematic openjdk-6-src-b17-stack-protector.patch was part of the openJDK maintenance update for openSUSE-11.2 :-(
Yes, the strace contains the same problem - opened a lot of /proc/self/maps files without closing. I got this bug. Rainer: please workaround it by removing openjdk and instaling Sun Java, I cannot guarantee this will be fixed soon, because I'd like to merge it with an update of openjdk to newest release. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Concerning your comment 21, I downgraded the package, waiting a next update, although I realize that openSuSE 11.2 is cared-less (for instance, there has not been a kernel update in many month, and there is, I have, kernel issues: in a week I have more kernel hangs than all the hangs I ever had in 10 years as a SuSE user, and 11.2 is the first version which worries me due to the lot of times I have lost my data). That is why, in my case, I am very disappointed by 11.2, and, although I do not really know if 11.3 will be so better, I plan to move on as soon 11.3 be released. Thus, it will be what came first: java update or 11.3. Meanwhile, if I might contribute to help you solve any issues, I will do that, because I know that the solution of those issues will benefit what-ever version of SuSE be (I am confident of that). I would downgrade my SuSE to 10.2, which has been, since my humble point of view, the best distribution ever (I have my box, and rsync'ed mirrors the OSS, Non-OSS, Update, Packman, Videolan repositories for it in my HD, and even my first PC, a Compaq Presario 7111LA, improved, still runs it, and I am able to build my own rpms, update from its own pages my preferred applications, &c.), but my new Tablet PC is not supported by 10.2. And downgrading does not help to improve SuSE, nor warranty that in a near future these issues would be solve so I could use a modern SuSE SO that fitted my PC, nor solve my need of a good Tablet support, etc. So, I prefer to bother you with my complaints, help you following your suggestion, and thank you every time, specially when the issues are solved. Thank you. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
