[Bug 239699] New: SaX2 needs -c option for Matrox G550 on Intel 965 board
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239699 Summary: SaX2 needs -c option for Matrox G550 on Intel 965 board Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: tilman@imap.cc QAContact: qa@suse.de Opensuse 10.2 Retail, Intel DQ965GF motherboard (on-board graphics not used), Matrox G550 PCIe graphics card, installation in graphics mode, German language selected. No problems up to and including network configuration, online update, and user setup. Probing the graphics hardware during hardware component selection fails, leading to the message "ERROR: no proposal" in YaST2 and no way to go on. (Separate issue, see bug 239695.) Running sax2 manually produces the message: xenon:~ # sax2 -r SaX: initializing please wait... SaX: your current configuration will not be read in SaX: no X-Server is running SaX: will start own server if needed SaX: ups lost card during probing... abort SaX: something went wrong while X was called with -probeonly SaX: try to call 'sax2 -p' and select a single device ? abort Output of 'sax2 -p': xenon:~ # sax2 -p Chip: 0 is -> VESA Framebuffer Graphics 00:02:0 0x8086 0x2992 PCI fbdev Chip: 1 is -> Matrox G550 05:00:0 0x102b 0x2527 AGP mga Running SaX2 with the option '-c 1' eventually leads to a successful graphics setup. But adding a separate graphics card to a board with on-board graphics is rather common, so it would be nice if SaX2 was able to cope with such a configuration on its own. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

To reiterate, I am not using the 965 onboard graphics adapter, nor do I intend to. No monitor is connected to it. I have never configured it. It would be disabled in the BIOS if the BIOS had that option. So if you are asking for an xorg.conf file that would activate the i810 X driver, I don't have one and I never had one, neither on 10.2 nor 10.3. The machine has a Matrox G550 dual DVI PCIe card to which my monitor is attached via DVI. It is set as the Primary Video Adapter in the BIOS. I was able to configure that for X (more or less satisfactorily) by running SaX2 with the "-c 1" argument, on 10.2 as well as 10.3. The reason for my bug report was that I would like SaX2 to cope with that situation on its own, without the "-c 1" argument, so that I might have a chance to complete a regular YaST2 setup. I should also mention that the regular OS on this machine continues to be 10.2. I have installed 10.3 alpha 1 on a separate partition only for the tests you asked from me in the context of this bug. If you want me to connect a monitor to my on-board Intel 965 graphics adapter and try to configure that for X, please say so. I might be able to arrange that. In that case, please also tell me whether I should disconnect the monitor from the Matrox card and change the BIOS display order to have the on-board display as the primary one. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Now I understand. For the initial problem I can't provide a solution. SaX2 creates a Dualcard setup, which seems to fail with the Intel onboard graphics adapter. :-( As a side note. I never heard of any working Dualhead configuration together with Intel onboard graphics. We have nearly every Intel onboard graphics available for testing, but all of them automatically disable the onbard graphics once you plug in a graphics card. So these setups are something we cannot reproduce. Probably it's a hardware/BIOS bug, that the onboard graphics are still shown as "active". Testing the 965Q support would be of great help for us. Yes, please set the on-board graphics to primary for this and connect the monitor to the Intel VGA connector already for booting. The "sax2 -p" output might change, so you might need "sax2 -c 1 -m 0=i810beta" now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239699 ------- Comment #22 from tilman@imap.cc 2007-02-20 14:25 MST ------- Ok, I did a couple of tests with a monitor connected to the onboard VGA and the "Primary Video" BIOS option set to "Int Graphics (IGD)". 1. Tried to boot directly to runlevel 5 without reconfiguring X. Well, that was obviously reckless, and I got what I deserved: when the X server tried to start, the "onboard VGA" monitor went black, the "Matrox" monitor went from "no signal" to "Input not supported", and I was left with an unresponsive system - keyboard dead (not even NumLock), power button dead, only hard reset would work. 2. Booted to runlevel 3, ran SaX2 without an argument. This briefly displayed the default X background, and then the system was unresponsive again, as above. 3. Booted to runlevel 3 again, ran SaX2 again, this time with "-c 0". All fine and dandy. It built an X configuration with i810beta which works ok. 4. Ran SaX2 again with "-c 0 -m 0=i810". Fine too. It built an X configuration with i810 which seems to work even better, if anything. I'm attaching the collected logs from these, tarred and feathered^Wgzipped, for your perusal.
