[Bug 733136] New: Missing warning about use of btrfs in release notes in openSUSE 12.1
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=733136 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=733136#c0 Summary: Missing warning about use of btrfs in release notes in openSUSE 12.1 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Documentation AssignedTo: ke@suse.com ReportedBy: martin_helm@arcor.de QAContact: ke@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 The release notes contain no warning about using btrfs (it lacks proper repair tools). This leads users to the assumption the file system is stable. If their system breaks they cannot even get help since there are no repair tools. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: There should be a note that tells the user the state of the file system at least a link to a place there the current state can be followed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As a preview of the new technology, you can create btrfs partitions or setup your whole system with btrfs. Note that the btrfs file system still lacks proper external check and repair tools (fsck) and thus in case of crashes, data recovery might not be possible. Thus we advise to not put critical data on the filesystem yet. Btrfs contains many interesting new features, including the ability to do snapshots of your filesystem. This is integrated into the package management tools of SUSE and YaST. Any comments from other btrfs experts? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Martin's email (http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2011-11/msg01682.html) mentioned the following quote from the btrfs main wiki page: "Note that Btrfs does not yet have a fsck tool that can fix errors. While Btrfs is stable on a stable machine, it is currently possible to corrupt a filesystem irrecoverably if your machine crashes or loses power on disks that don't handle flush requests correctly. This will be fixed when the fsck tool is ready." What about fixing the real bugs instead with looking at these: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/1218615 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdif... And indeed, "scrub" has been included in the btrfsprogs recently, and thus the threat of not having a btrfs.fsck is mitigated or even removed (in my view). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please push the kernel-side to the kernel git repo, it's not yet in the 12.1 tree.
