[Bug 687105] New: Booting 11.4 live boot with an 11.3 live boot also present produces a hybrid system (11.4 kernel and 11.3 root filesystem)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687105 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687105#c0 Summary: Booting 11.4 live boot with an 11.3 live boot also present produces a hybrid system (11.4 kernel and 11.3 root filesystem) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: PC OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium AssignedTo: coolo@novell.com ReportedBy: DnlPbl@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=424620) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=424620) the entire /var/log tree is included in case any of the files are useful User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 SUSE/3.6.13-0.2.1 Firefox/3.6.13 Booted from official 11.4 Gnome live CD 32-bit. An official 11.3 Gnome live 32-bit image on a USB flash drive was also attached to the PC. the following is seen on the screen during boot: 11.4 welcome screen 11.4 boot menu loading linux kernel window brief black screen brief 11.4 boot progress screen shown brief black screen 11.4 boot progress screen with empty progress bar (no progress is ever shown) black screen with underscore cursor in top left corner black screen with circular pointer containing spinning dots 11.3 (NOT 11.4) desktop is displayed the network connection, which works under both the 11.3 and 11.4 live boot environments with no problems, is inoperative in the hybrid environment. in yast network settings, it displays the name of the NIC, with the error message "unable to configure the network card, because the kernel device (eth0,wlan0) is not present" sound, which works in both normal live boot environments, is inoperative in the hybrid environment. the sound configuration tool in yast fails to show the sound hardware testing for additional malfunctions were not conducted after completion of boot, the following tests were done: 1) uname -a shows 11.4 kernel present in memory. the version shown was 2.6.37.1-1.2-default 2) cat /etc/SuSE-release (contained on root filesystem) displays openSUSE 11.3 (i586) when powering off or rebooting, the 11.4 progress screen is displayed this behavior occurs whether the flash drive or the CD has boot priority in BIOS. note: when the flash drive has boot priority, the BIOS manual boot menu screen was used to force a boot from the CD (instead of the higher priority flash drive) this behavior was observed on multiple PCs with different CPUs. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Insert an 11.4 live CD in drive and an 11.3 live USB flash in USB port 2. power on and boot from the 11.4 live CD Actual Results: when done booting, 11.4 kernel is present in memory, while the 11.3 root filesystem is mounted. network and sound devices (that normally work in 11.3 and 11.4 live environments) are missing in this hybrid environment Expected Results: Expected to boot to a live system that was completely and exclusively 11.4 - both the running kernel and the mounted root filesystem -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This should not happen because of the mbrid is checked, but that's purely a kiwi issue. A rather minor though - I wonder why you consider it a major, it sounds rather academic to me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Normally there is the MBR ID check so I'm wondering why this happened -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
