https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=736108 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=736108#c0 Summary: Unable to boot from hard drive. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: james.knott@rogers.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 I have installed 64 bit openSUSE 12.1 on a system with an Asus A8N-E mother board. I have set grub to boot from /dev/sda1, which is a 100 MB etx2 primary partition. I cannot boot this system, unless I first boot to the install DVD and then let it boot from hard disk. I have also tried setting grub to use the MBR, but it still fails in the same manner. When it fails, the computer stops after listing all the PCI devices. I can use the keyboard to reboot, so the computer is not locked up. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.boot computer without install DVD in drive 2. 3. Actual Results: Stops booting Expected Results: Boot to system -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

How can I tell? As I mentioned, it displays the IRQ info and then stops. I believe the ISOLINUX copyright notice should appear at that point, but it doesn't. The CPU hasn't locked up, as I can use Ctl-Alt-Del to reboot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

GRUB shows that it is loading kernel and initrd, then starts the system. If it writes more, then it is kernel. Therefore I assumed that kernel is already running. Can you confirm that after loading kernel and initrd you get more messages? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

All use Grub. One system is slow enough that I can read what happens after the hardware is identified. It is the line I mentioned, re ISOLINUX, that is displayed briefly, before continuing on with loading. On the failing system, I don't see anything else displayed after all the IRQs are listed. The boot process just stops at that point and all I can do is reboot. There is absolutely nothing displayed re kernel or initrd. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
