With 11.1 (RC1), I'm unable to configure the sound to work. Show /proc/asound/cards. Possibly the modem driver appears in the first slot? If yes, try to set up the sound device via YaST (and check after reboot, too).

I log in with *xdm* not *gdm* or *kdm*. It doesn't work with GNOME or KDE4 desktop because of pulseaudio problem. For testing the sound, simply run "aplay -vv somefile.wav". First try as root. If this works, then the problem could be the permission problem indeed. As you see in the above, your account isn't listed in the files.
