[Bug 278893] New: instlux dumps user to GRUB prompt
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278893 Summary: instlux dumps user to GRUB prompt Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cgroneman@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com With 10.3 alpha 4, if I try to use the windows installer (instlux), after it reboots the system it dumps me to a grub prompt. The Details: I have Windows XP (32 bit) and Opensuse 10.1 installed on my x86_64 laptop, with a free partition /dev/hda7 available to install onto. GRUB is my bootloader. If I chainboot to Windows, the Windows bootloader typically gives me two choices to boot, both the same OS, because I added a second entry into the Windows bootloader a while back and never bothered to fix it. That may be irrelevant, I'm just giving the existing setup. When I run the openSUSE10_3_LOCAL.exe off the 64 bit DVD, it copies a few files to the hard drive and asks to reboot. If I do so, and select my Windows GRUB entry, I am presented with my Windows bootloader, with three entries - the original two, and an additional one that is "openSUSE 10.3 Installer (LOCAL)". If I choose that option, it flashes some grub screens, then dumps me to a text mode GRUB prompt. If I select a regular Windows entry, it boots Windows and asks me to uninstall OpenSUSE 10.3. This may be related to bug 275571, but I think it's different. Please let me know what log files / other information I can provide. I will attach the menu.lst it installs to the Windows C:\. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Then change the menu.lst in C:\ and remove the first line (hiddenmneu). And look out for some grub warnings/errors. I guess grub has a problem with the kernel parameters or is missing some files. Could you check also if following files is present before rebooting windows: C:\menu.lst C:\openSUSE\initrd C:\openSUSE\linux C:\grldr Did you run instlux before on another system? Is there anywhere else a /openSUSE_hitme.txt or X:\openSUSE_hitme.txt - GRUB make use of the wrong root partition if there is more then one openSUSE_hitme.txt. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

All the files do exist on C:\. When I removed the hiddenmenu, nothing special happened - no errors, etc. It outputs the following information right before going to the grub prompt: ---- Booting 'find /menu.lst' find --set-root /menu.lst (hd0,0) Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xc configfile /menu.lst ---- After that, I am at the text based grub prompt. I did some more investigating, and found some interesting things I hope will help you find the problem. 1. Even though it found the /menu.lst file (or the openSUSE_hitme.txt, it did NOT set the root to (hd0,0). If I immediately type 'root', it tells me the root is "(hd31): Filesystem type is iso9006, using whole disk". 2. If I try to specify the kernel by putting in "kernel /" and then pressing tab a few times, it shows the files on the opensuse DVD. 3. If I manually run "find --set-root /menu.lst", and re-check the root, it is properly set to (hd0,0). 4. If I reboot with the DVD out of the drive, it properly loads at least to a point where it says "you passed an undefined mode number" and I can wait 30 seconds before it continues on. The video parameter is set to vga=0x31A. Eventually it starts the install. Okay, now a couple of my own thoughts. Why even include this if you reboot to start the install anyway? It's the same result as booting off the CD, but a lot more complicated. Also, my 2 cents is that vga=normal should be default. Anything else just slows things down and can cause problems (256+ LUNs?). But I realize that's out of the scope of this bug. I would like to see an installer that can format an available partition and install the RPMS, etc from within the running OS (whether that be Windows or another flavor of linux). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I have never used instlux prior to this. All the files do exist on C:\. When I removed the hiddenmenu, nothing special happened - no errors, etc.
It outputs the following information right before going to the grub prompt: ---- Booting 'find /menu.lst'
find --set-root /menu.lst (hd0,0) Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xc configfile /menu.lst ----
Actually it should be "find --set-root /openSUSE_hitme.txt"
4. If I reboot with the DVD out of the drive, it properly loads at least to a point where it says "you passed an undefined mode number" and I can wait 30 seconds before it continues on. The video parameter is set to vga=0x31A. Eventually it starts the install. Which screen resolution do you use in Windows?
Also, my 2 cents is that vga=normal should be default. Anything else just slows things down and can cause problems (256+ LUNs?). But I realize that's out of the scope of this bug. We set the vga mode to have later bootsplash running.. so users don't get bothered by booting dumps... We should try to fix the bug for your system.
I would like to see an installer that can format an available partition and install the RPMS, etc from within the running OS (whether that be Windows or another flavor of linux). We try to avoid as much actions in the instlux installer as possible... so i doubt that we will do a complete install while running Windows. At least instlux wasn't designed for that task. Maybe you should report this enhancement upstream... i will also talk to the upstream Maintainer about that feature.
