[Bug 206488] New: unexpected behaviour with [beagle] search in kickoff
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206488 Summary: unexpected behaviour with [beagle] search in kickoff Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: francisg@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Ok, so I fire up the kickoff menu and the cursour lands directly on the search -- perfect. I type the name of a file that I know is in my home directory, named 'timetable'. The file comes up, and it appears selected. Now, if I want to open this item, there's practically no way of doing so with the keyboard. I have to pick up the mouse again, and then go to the item. Furthermore, if I actually want to go to the second or third item, I still can't hit down-arrow to get to it. I notice the problem, of course. The search works both as an application-launcher (like alt+f2) and as a kerry-beagle search. The former necessitates that previous commands are shown, and the latter necessitates that you can go through the items; both of which use the arrows. What is counter-intuitive mainly, however, is that the item is selected automatically in the search results. This implies that 'Enter' would open it, and yet that's not the case. 'Enter' executes the command 'timetable'. One of them has to be scrapped (as TAB is taken too), and really I don't think it would be nearly as bad if the up-down history for the application-launcher part was scrapped. Particularly because you still have the light-grey auto-complete text that could still work and be handy. So, to sum up, a search result should never really be highlighted automatically (since that implies that 'Enter' executes it, and you never know whether the user wants to execute the command or not), and the up-down buttons for previous application-execution history should be scrapped, so that it can be used in search results. I've gone on a bit now, so I apologise for that, but if there's anything else I'll be happy to clarify any part of what I mean. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206488 ------- Comment #1 from francisg@gmail.com 2006-09-18 09:41 MST ------- On a side note, could right-clicking on an object produce all the general options it might have? i.e. for a JPEG: open with, actions etc To ask another question, sorry if this is in the works, but I guess the "(top 5 of X)" will eventually fire up kerry for the full results, or something of the sort? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

could right-clicking on an object produce all the general options it might have?
It does, in the "Advanced" sub-menu.
I guess the "(top 5 of X)" will eventually fire up kerry
Yes, that was broken in Alpha 4. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206488 ------- Comment #3 from francisg@gmail.com 2006-09-21 07:50 MST ------- Just to add, I don't think the search query should automatically highlight the first search result. That's because you don't know if the user wants to simply execute the command. For example, say I want to type 'foo --bar', kickoff's first result is foo (so that would be selected and consequently run if I hit Enter), but in actual fact I want to run 'foo --bar'.
could right-clicking on an object produce all the general options it might have?
It does, in the "Advanced" sub-menu.
I'm not sure it's a safe assumption that the most likely thing a user would do with a document from the search result would be to add it to favourite, panel or desktop. I agree that this might be the case for other menu items (such as things from Recently Used, All Programs), but not so sure about things from the search results. Perhaps it'd be good to either have those "Add" things under actions or a whole new sub-menu. Any thoughts? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206488 ------- Comment #4 from francisg@gmail.com 2006-10-08 10:03 MST ------- Though the first problem was fixed, the other unexpected behaviour that I said might occur in my last post, does now. Thing is, since the first result is selected automatically, <Enter> opens it, so you can't really execute commands. i.e. if you type a program name really fast, and particularly if you haven't typed it before, it either won't open it, or it'll open up another app -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But how is that not unexpected? If an item in a search result list is highlighted, is it not more (and I apologise for using the overused :P) intuitive to presuppose that up/down will take you up/down in the results? That you should press <tab> first, and _then_ up/down for this to happen doesn't seem natural. :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It is a bit complicated to realize that a selection highlight is not a current item/ focus indication, but this is how any other dialog with keyboard navigation behaves as well. there are items that are selected, yet they're *not* the current item. I don't see anything to fix here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Either way, I haven't missed it at all. What do you think about disabling the up/down history (in fact, since it's a search as-you-type I'm not sure it makes *too* much sense; maybe if it was a history of the previously clicked items, but still), and just having the greyd out completion? That way you escape the tab problem, and yet you still have completion. (I'll close since the original problem was solved, but reopen if you think this idea is reasonable, won't hassle you more if you disagree :) ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
