[Bug 463461] New: smolt configures a cron job that might not be addequate
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=463461 Summary: smolt configures a cron job that might not be addequate Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: robin.listas@telefonica.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I write this recognizing my ignorance on how smolt works, because this is not documented, AFAIK - thus if I make a mistake in this report, please say so, and then document it. Smolt installs a cron job in /etc/cron.d/smolt and a service (disabled by default, and for an unknown purpose and work method) in /etc/init.d/smolt. It is my understanding that if the profile is not resubmitted in a period of 3 months, it is automatically disabled at the server. This the cron job. It reads: # Runs the smolt checkin client # Please note that calling with -c will cause smolt to pause a random amount of # time between 0 and 3 days before actually sending, this is to prevent ddos on # the server 20 1 1 * * smolt /usr/bin/smoltSendProfile -c > /dev/null 2>&1 Ie, the 1st day of the month at 1:20. * First error: what happens if the machine is not running that precise day? At those early hours, only 24*7 machines, ie servers, will be running. Then when it runs, I understand the program loads and sleeps for a random period of up to three days; thus: * Second error: what happens if the machine is powered off before it actually sends the profile? All these are deductions, without documentation. Perhaps you have catered for this, but otherwise, you might think of moving the cron job to /etc/cron.monthly/ instead, and remove the "-c", or simulate it some other way that doesn't need the machine to be continuously running. And somebody please tell us what is the /etc/init.d/smolt service for and should we enable it or not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If this is so, this is not so "minor".
Im not downplaying your report, "minor" is because, compared to the other zillion of reports, this issue is minor, anyway. finally, henne would decide what the severity of this bug is according to his own workflow and priorities. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
