(xinetd) There should be a binary in /usr/sbin, trying to run it from a terminal results in nothing( #/usr/sbin/xinetd ) Nautilus reports the file as "shared library" rather than "executable". Alas there is no indication to that end in the description, it plainly states: Start the xinet daemon In addition, if Samba is installed, SWAT gets installed automatically, but not enabled in xinetd, nor is xinetd started. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244509 locilka@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |WORKSFORME ------- Comment #8 from locilka@novell.com 2007-04-10 03:35 MST ------- At first, I'm sorry for not solving this issue for quite a long time. Anyway, this works as designed: xinetd is just daemon that stats if there is anything that it could do. That's why it doesn't start in case of no service configured to run under xinetd. 1.) Runlevel editor - there you can enable or disable service to be started (not to be started) at boot time. xinetd doesn't start if no service is configured but system, at least, tries starting it... 2.) Network Services xinted - If you just enable the service here, without enabling any services to be started under it, YaST reports that it will be disabled because of that. It doesn't make sense to start the xinetd daemon without any services configured, the daemon wouldn't do anything... just occupy memory. The issue about SWAT* being installed but without having it enabled is probably because of RPM dependencies in samba. Not starting SWAT despite having it installed automatically seems to be correct because SWAT starting is optional. Nautilus issue* seems to be problem of Nautilus itself. *) Please, write one report per issue. One bugreport for several issues is almost unsolvable because they can (and probably) have different responsible persons. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The remark about Nautilus was just an observation in the context, not a bug-report. If you think there is something wrong there, worth a bug-report I will gladly file a new one. As for the general isssue, I suggest that the configuration of xinet is changed in a way that makes this behavior transparent for users, especially new ones. At least there should be a remark in the System Services configuration for xinetd, that it needs to be configured in its own configuration menu under Network Services. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

However, I'd need to solve one additional issue - How to find out, that xinetd is not configured...? This might be the very same problem with ftp, for example. It needs to be "properly" configured too (and many other services). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244509 ------- Comment #13 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-04-11 00:13 MST ------- Well, not sure whether there's an "easy" way. You can obviously check all files in /etc/xinet.d/ for the line "disable = yes" All xinet services have their config file in that directory, if there is none with "disable = no", then xinet will have nothing to do and therefore be disabled. You could add some checking to /etc/init.d/xinetd as well as adding some more text to the INFO block in /etc/init.d/xinetd ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: xinetd # Required-Start: $network $remote_fs # Required-Stop: $network # X-UnitedLinux-Should-Start: portmap autofs # Default-Start: 3 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 2 6 # Description: Start the xinet daemon. ### END INIT INFO Description is VERY frugal :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
