[Bug 243036] New: SuspendToDisk (hibernate) always fails the second time
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243036 Summary: SuspendToDisk (hibernate) always fails the second time Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: danielstefanmader@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de When putting the laptop to sleep again a second time after a successful first suspend/resume cycle, the computer always hangs: the screen goes black and the system is preparing for hibernate -- and that's it. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del pops up a second line which announces the system is going to reboot but nothing happens. Also no virtual console on Ctrl+Alt+F1..6 is available. The system is dead then. This has worked flawless before on 10.1, 10.2 betas and RCs and broke due to some update in 10.2 final. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Disabling it makes no difference, though (I used sax2 in runlevel 3 to generate a completely new xorg.conf without 3D enabled) -- since this is the case and since vertical scrolling in Firefox is now horribly slow I will turn it on again until you need another testcase. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243036 ------- Comment #20 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-02-19 14:46 MST ------- I can not and will not track down this bug any further. Everything really points to Networkmanager (or knetworkmananager, that is). I can suspend a million times with no problems at all but as soon as I connected with NM the machine hangs after the first successful cycle. I also noticed that when instead of trying a S2D I simply log out it takes X *ages* to restart and shows only a cursor on a black screen, waiting for something. Switching to a virtual terminal I can not even log in then at all. When X is back again I can at least reboot normally, though. Considering the fact that knetworkmanager is *still* not able to correctly and reliably look up stored passwords in the wallet I would suggest some *serious* debugging in that f*** app. Honestly, I am loosing patience with it. There are and have been a million bug reports concerning NetworkManager and its applet for KDE (also Gnome?!) many of which get closed as invalid all too quickly or get some soso fix which never really touches the insides, it seems. I am *not* going to file another report on this supercrappy, horribly buggy tool since there seems to be too little interest. A thorough code review is essential everything else is just a waste of time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

We want to fix kernel, too. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243036 ------- Comment #22 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-02-20 02:24 MST ------- Good morning :) New day, less anger... I do *not* think that we have a kernel crash! Plain and simply because when everything seems dead ("Preparing hibernate...") I can still press Ctrl+Alt+Del and the system informs me that it is going to reboot! So it is very much alive! It is just waiting for some rioting process to terminate which never happens. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243036 ------- Comment #23 from seife@novell.com 2007-02-20 03:05 MST ------- Well, stopping processes times out and you gen an error message (in syslog, that is, but still). This looks more like a device driver going crazy, but triggered mainly by NetworkManager. You could also try if you can still switch to console 1 (probably log into console 1 before trying to suspend) and maybe check with "ps aux" what the system is doing. Maybe it is still doing something in userspace. A hanging "rmmod" for example would be a prime example for something that could trigger that. I know it is not funny to debug this and (un?)fortunately something like your bug seldom happens on the hardware/software combinations i use... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243036 ------- Comment #24 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-02-20 03:44 MST ------- I have tried that already, of course: it is impossible to switch to a console, no matter if I have already logged in there or not. Concerning my hardware: I am using an Acer Travelmate 290LCi. Apart from that shitty i855 onboard graphics chipset I would consider it a pretty solid Centrino laptop... I really like it. And basically, I consider NetworkManager as *the* -- I repeat -- *the* innovation of the past years for Linux Desktops. Unfortunately it is still buggy as hell (even without that problem from above) and should come with an explicit "EXPERIMENTAL" sticker. Would be even better of course if it got rid of its children's diseases anytime soon. Also, I am missing a CLI for it :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243036 ------- Comment #26 from danielstefanmader@web.de 2007-02-26 15:29 MST ------- I have no idea how to further debug this, honestly. It is that bloody NetworkManager thing... If I don't connect with it or if I kill it and do rcnetwork restart, then the suspend seems to work fine. Either way: something is odd, and WiFi without encryption (someone was suggesting that as a problem) is plain stupid, so this needs a fix, I'd say. If you could give me a more detailed description of what to do it'd be a pleasure for me to help you (and eventually me, that is :) BTW: I have installed the Boxed version this weekend because I was getting other weird behavior, most likely because of the million hard system power downs -- I have a lot of faith in Linux' journaled filesystems but this was apparently too much for ext3. And with a fresh and clean install and a new user I get exactly the same result concerning suspend2disk :( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That is something different than "unwilling". Jesus. 10.1 had a nice and working powermanagement in my eyes, and 10.2 is a huge step backwards. Suspending features are a must on mobile computers. Very interesting to read that obviously you don't care shit about that. And concerning the third paragraph: 1) yes, the problem is in userspace, I agree. 2) Why should I, see 1) ? 3) You might want to have a look at the subject of the bug. This bug *is* a NetworkManager bug. Sorry if I sound harsh but I don't think it is a good idea to handle issues like that.
