[Bug 555615] New: boot.msg does not contain to whole boot process anymore
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=555615 Summary: boot.msg does not contain to whole boot process anymore Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sven.burmeister@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- --- Comment #0 from Sven Burmeister <sven.burmeister@gmx.net> 2009-11-15 10:20:15 UTC --- Created an attachment (id=327585) too short boot.msg User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 SUSE/3.5.4-1.1.2 Firefox/3.5.4 I reported some bug and submitted the boot.msg which at that point contained everything the boot process shows on terminal one. Now I wanted to check that bug again and noticed that boot.msg is a lot shorter, i.e. stops after mounting the harddisk partitions and does not contain anything from the area where e.g. HAL is started. Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

OK it does speed up the boot process but as seen by this bug report it makes debugging more difficulty -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Anyway, if Sven wants to debug something, he needs to remove quiet from the command line then. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=555615 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=555615#c8 --- Comment #8 from Dr. Werner Fink <werner@novell.com> 2009-12-08 16:50:08 UTC --- If blogd is used it simply creates its own pty/tty pair and talks to the kernel to switch /dev/console to the new tty ... blogd reads then /dev/console, writes a copy into its ring buffer or if writable to /var/log/boot.msg, and also puts the messages to the old physical devices of the former /dev/console ... This requires some resources. Now if you use ``quiet'' and/or ``fastboot'' in the kernels command line then in /etc/init.d/boot and /etc/init.d/rc the blogd is not started to not to use this resources. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
