[Bug 819798] New: No easy way to try keyboard layout during installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=819798 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=819798#c0 Summary: No easy way to try keyboard layout during installation Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 12.3 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sknorr@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 It would be cool to have a simple text field next to the keyboard layout selector to test whether one is setting the right layout during installation. (Very useful for checking deadkeys etc. Also, this is a standard feature e.g. of Ubuntu's Ubiquity installer.) The workaround I found for this was to click the Help button, and then enter something in the search field. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Insert install CD/DVD/USB drive 2. Choose Install option 3. Wait. 4. On the screen appearing now, you can set the language and keyboard layout. Actual Results: There is no text field to try the layout. Expected Results: There should be a text field to try the layout. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi Jiri,
luckily, the Ubuntu folks have documented their installer pretty well. See step 7 from: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-desktop-latest
Well, this is quite similar to what we have in special keboard settings. We actually had it accessible directly as installation step as well, but later chose to use that dialog which just groups more stuff together: it is enough for most users, who also benefict from the shorter workflow. Others have still the option to use expert dialog (accessible from the summary). About the license texts... you can see there's actually no acceptance here, just displaying the texts, which is, by nature different from the texts of the package licenses. Anyway, I still think our current way is the better one of those available. Coolo: any opinions? Could we remove the license from openSUSE? Should we add keyboard test entry into the first dialog? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm sure there are many asking for a shorter installation workflow in ubuntu "because openSUSE proves it works"
Hum, well: * Ubuntu's installer is actually a step shorter (I've counted) * Ubuntu's installer is finished quicker, because it starts copying files immediately after you picked the right partition layout and then lets you set up things like user name, time zone, etc. * After you've installed it, an Ubuntu system is already up-to-date, can play Flash movies and MP3's (if you selected that tick box), and has Wi-fi set up * Ubuntu doesn't make its users decide between two desktops (which to novice users is an impossible-to-make decision & so, I guess, quite a time-waster for them) * Ubuntu's partition set up is much more user-friendly It's by no means perfect, but, and that is indeed just imho, looks/feels more professional and trustworthy.
I can't see the value of dead keys during installation either. If your user name has dead keys, you will have *that* test 2 screens later. If not, you can fix the layout after installation.
Sure, but why not pick the right one immediately? There'd be no need for an installer, if it were fine for everyone to just configure everything post file-copying. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
