I just did a fresh install of 11.1 on the same GX260 with the BIOS framebuffer set to 1MB instead of 8MB. Upon automatic "reboot" after packages finished installing, The screen seems to come up in a 2bpp or 4bpp mode initally, making the text unintelligible. After a short time, the screen goes black, and attempting to change to a VC via Ctrl-Alt-Fx completely fails, leaving me to think that at this point is when YaST2 has handed off to SaX2. I suspect that with BIOS set to 8MB framebuffer instead of 1MB this might not happen. Stefan, this bug is about SaX2 - where is upstream for that?
There is no bug in SaX2 for this. You confirmed that SaX2 wrote EXANoComposite as expected. The remaining issue is that this option doesn't help on your hardware, but that's not SaX2 related.
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2008-12/msg01118.html indicates Lynn is 20 users,
Not at all. Sounds more like 20 identical machines. And he's talking about screen flicker. Is this with fbdev, vesa or intel with EXANoComposite. I don't know.

(In reply to comment #30 from Stefan Dirsch)
There is no bug in SaX2 for this. You confirmed that SaX2 wrote EXANoComposite as expected. The remaining issue is that this option doesn't help on your hardware, but that's not SaX2 related.
Besides the two non-identical GX260s, I also tested on Intel's own http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/va/index.htm using a 2.4GHz Celeron and 2x256M RAM. EXANoComposite helps on none of the 3 845Gs I tested on.
Sounds more like 20 identical machines.
I think between Lynn & me there are at least 3 non-identicals.
And he's talking about screen flicker. Is this with fbdev, vesa or intel with EXANoComposite. I don't know.
I think Lynn's flicker happens with VESA.
Have you ever considered to send one of these machines to Intel's upstream developers?
ISTR some mention of that someone else might do that not so long ago, but as this can be reproduced on Intel's own motherboard I don't think that should be necessary. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18555 looks like a more appropriate upstream. That suggests maybe to substitute 'Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"' for 'Option "EXANoComposite"' to fix the bug. I already put the Radeon back in GX260 BP3YJ21, but XAA worksforme in the other two boxes. On the Celeron the Youtube video performance is awful, about the same as with NoAccel. On the P4 performance seems good enough for such an antique. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Why don't you provide this information upstream.
I referred in upstream 18555 to this.
What can we do here.
SaX2 & the installer need to bow out politely, as long as they can't get it right, rather than locking the system up. And relnote.
I already mentioned that we can't make noaccel the default and XAA is no longer supported by Intel.
Until upstream is fixed, why can't NoAccel be default for one chipset? Is there more than one 845G system that EXANoComposite without NoAccel actually works on?
I didn't close this bug as INVALID.
Lynn did, by accident I'm guessing. It needs to stay open pending better behavior than just locking the system up. Upstream is not fixed, so nothing is really resolved. I don't understand why on Novell Bugzilla open upstreams aren't marked as open deps rather than resolved. FWIW to upstream readers here, current 11.1 driver version is 1.5.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've now got 3 very slow but working 11.1 installations. </thanks> OK After 11.1 installs on 3 separate Dell GX260's, the only way I can get the intel driver to work is using Option "NoAccel" That slows the screen down so as to be unacceptable. Would it be acceptable netiquette to open another bugzilla asking for a work around for not having to use NoAccel (which cripples the graphics)? I don't think it would be helpful to file anything more here. Intel drivers are wholly upstream dependent. Upstream fixes automatically get taken here, so the best thing is probably to help and/or pressure upstream.
