[Bug 302107] New: SAX2 sets all Compose-Key variants on 2nd run
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=302107 Summary: SAX2 sets all Compose-Key variants on 2nd run Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: funtasyspace@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I used SAX2 to configure the Compose-Key of my keyboard. I just checked the 'Right Ctrl-Key is Compose' checkbox and saved the config. In /etc/X11/xorg.conf there's the correct line Option "XkbOptions" "Compose, compose:rctrl" in Section "InputDevice". But if I run SAX2 the next time, all Compose-Key checkboxes are shown as checked. This causes, that all those keys are Compose-Keys too, if you exit SAX2 and save the settings the next time. Option "XkbOptions" "Compose, compose:rctrl, compose:lwin, compose:menu, compose:ralt, compose:caps, compose:rwin" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=302107#c1 --- Comment #1 from Jörg Hermsdorf <funtasyspace@yahoo.com> 2007-08-21 05:56:14 MST --- I just found out, that the line Option "XkbModel" "microsoftpro" was removed from /etc/X11/xorg.conf during the 2nd run, too. If I run SAX2 a 3rd time now, SAX2 will automatically select the first keyboard layout from it's list (A4Tech KBS-8) and write this to the config on exit. I just want to note, that I didn't touch any keyboard settings during the 2nd and 3rd run, SAX2 did this on it's own. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I do the configuration with the compose key I got: Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rctrl" and re-reading this file works as expected. In your case you said there is: Option "XkbOptions" "Compose, compose:rctrl" which means all Compose options + compose:rctrl which doesn't make sense to me. I could imagine that your original xorg.conf has the line Option "XkbOptions" "Compose" included and sax just enhances this one -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=302107#c3 Jörg Hermsdorf <funtasyspace@yahoo.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|RESOLVED |REOPENED Resolution|WORKSFORME | --- Comment #3 from Jörg Hermsdorf <funtasyspace@yahoo.com> 2007-08-22 06:35:28 MST --- Ok, I just found out, that this happens only, if I configure my keyboard from a running KDE session via YaST2 -> Hardware -> "Tastaturbelegung auswählen". In that case sax writes the line Option "XkbOptions" "Compose, compose:rctrl" to xorg.conf. But if I configure my keyboard while I'm in runlevel 3 via 'sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx' then sax writes only Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rctrl" to xorg.conf. Regarding the XkbModel oddity, I can say one thing for sure now: If I do a fresh sax configuration (with no previously existing xorg.conf), sax somehow decides that the 'Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro / Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro' layout type should be used on my ThinkPad T60p. I should note, that if I expand the drop-down selection box, the default selected 'Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro / Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro' entry is the first one in that list, followed by all the other layouts sorted in alphabetic order starting with 'A'. I can scroll down to the layouts staring with 'M', where I find a second entry with the same name 'Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro / Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro'. OK, if I don't select a different layout type, leave the first one in the list as the selected one and finish the configuration, sax won't write a XkbModel Option to xorg.conf. If I run sax again, the selected layout type is again the first entry in the selection list, but it's now the 'A4Tech KB-21' layout. The 'Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro / Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro' entry which was there at position one during the first run, isn't there any longer. If I finish the configuration now, sax writes the line Option "XkbModel" "a4techKB21" to xorg.conf. Next I did another fresh sax configuration, but this time I did not left the first 'Microsoft Natural...' layout type as the selected one, but I scrolled down to where all the layouts staring with 'M' are and selected it there. If I finish the configuration this way, sax writes the XkbModel option during the first run to xorg.conf. If I restart sax afterwards, this layout is correctly shown as the selected one. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=302107#c6 --- Comment #6 from Jörg Hermsdorf <funtasyspace@yahoo.com> 2007-08-22 13:20:45 MST --- I'm not sure that the settings were correct after installation, I don't think so... I just didn't notice they are not correct. There are actually 3 issues here: a) Why does sax choose the 'Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro / Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro' layout for my Lenovo ThinkPad T60p? b) There is something broken with the values of the select field for the keyboard layout during a fresh configuration. How to reproduce: - switch to init 3 - delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf - run 'sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx' - go to keyboard configuration, see that sax choose 'Microsoft Natural..." as layout for my system, but don't change it, leave it as it is - finish configuration and let sax write the settings - 'less /etc/X11/xorg.conf' to see that sax didn't write the "XkbModel" option into it, it's missing! - run sax again - go to keyboard configuration, now 'A4Tech KB-21' is the selected one - finish configuration, let sax write the settings - 'less /etc/X11/xorg.conf' to see that there is now the "XkbModel" option, but it's wrong of course, because I don't have a "a4techKB21" keyboard Conclusions: - If sax is supposed to detect and select the keyboard model automatically, it doesn't work (at least on my system). - If I select the keyboard model myself (change the value that sax preselects), the XkbModel option is correctly written to /etc/X11/xorg.conf c) If I configure the compose key for my keyboard via YaST2 (which uses sax!?) the XkbOptions line is not correct afterwards (see Comment #3). But if I configure via sax2 directly, the XkbOptions is correct. So there is a discrepancy between the YaST2 and sax2 approach. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
