[Bug 254382] New: Enhancements and ideas for Installation Sources and Add-Ons
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=254382 Summary: Enhancements and ideas for Installation Sources and Add- Ons Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 1plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: aj@novell.com ReportedBy: locilka@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: jsrain@novell.com, kkaempf@novell.com, lslezak@novell.com, visnov@novell.com These ideas are, first of all, for network installation sources, mostly for HTTP and FTP ones. Patterns: --------- There are 71 patterns in the current 10.3 A1+, they have 336362 bytes together. Maybe it's just my personal opinion but I think that downloading 71 files from a distant server is much worse than downloading only one file (archive) and then extracting the content. It also takes quite a lot of processor time to download so many files and to display information about downloading. Current: 71 files, 336362 bytes Proposal: 1 file, 98050 bytes Saves: ~71% packages.DU: ------------ This file is needed to find out how packages fill which directories with data (files). Directory Used. Let's gzip it. Current: 4119005 bytes Proposal: 620580 bytes Saves: ~85% packages: --------- Describes mostly dependencies, Let's gzip it. Current: 3615318 bytes Proposal: 658857 bytes Saves: ~82% The same might be applied to packages.$lang - - - - Gzipping or archiving (+gzipping) those files might be good for network sources but it wouldn't make much sense for DVD. That's why I'd recommend to support both types at once, gzipped or plain. This solution should save network traffic and some processor time on the client side, additionally the same on the server side too. I'm writing it as enhancement just to consider these ideas. I don't want to fill FATE up with such things just now (but it's also possible ;)) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=254382 ------- Comment #3 from mboman@novell.com 2007-03-14 05:36 MST ------- Sure. How about a duplicate of Bug#248756 AND Bug#250451? But that's not exactly how you described it either so let's keep them all open :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=254382 ------- Comment #6 from kkaempf@novell.com 2007-04-24 07:10 MST ------- compressing metadata is covered in FATE #301916: Compressing SUSETag metadata (and everyone agrees that 'its a good thing' (tm) ;-) ) Combining patterns into one file is certainly an option. OTOH, one reason for the way we ship 'susetags' repository metadata is its ASCII nature and the easy ability to create, read, and modify. Combining files and compressing seem to be counter-productive in this regard .. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
