[Bug 244916] New: irq_balance is always enabed even if not needed
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244916 Summary: irq_balance is always enabed even if not needed Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 0plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: aj@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de We now use an SMP kernel by default and that one requires irq-balance and it's started automatically. But on single CPU system (and some SMP ones as well), it is not started and it shows up as "skipped". On such systems I get: # rcirq_balancer start Starting irqbalance unused I suggest to find a way so that irq_balancer is not added as init script. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244916 ------- Comment #3 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-09 10:29 MST ------- It's the same issue, and with changing to the new irqbalance the binary is started, but terminates itself when not required ( single CPU or dual core on one socket ) so this is solved IMHO -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244916 ------- Comment #4 from bwalle@novell.com 2007-05-22 02:50 MST ------- It would make sense to install the package only if number_of_cpus > 1. However, current HAL mechanisms don't allow this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244916 ------- Comment #5 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-22 05:39 MST ------- As I said in Comment #1 this is a duplicate of Bug 276887, you only need to remove the checking completely from the script, as irqbalance will not even start on a single CPU machine. ( I tried this out on my Sony Vaio PCG-SRX51P which happens to have just one socket with one CPU ) So your script would not be skipped, irqbalance would only run where needed, nobody would take offense reading messages about skipped services, everybody would be happy again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244916 ------- Comment #6 from bwalle@novell.com 2007-05-22 07:28 MST ------- For single CPU systems I want to avoid installation of the whole package, which also avoids also execution of the script. Installing less software is always better even if irqbalance terminates if the (logical) CPU number is less than 2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
