[Bug 641024] New: Xorg consumes 100% of CPU with nvidia drivers
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=641024 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=641024#c0 Summary: Xorg consumes 100% of CPU with nvidia drivers Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: psychonaut@nothingisreal.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.13) Gecko/20100914 SUSE/2.0.8-23.1 SeaMonkey/2.0.8 I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M graphics card. The system was working perfectly with openSUSE 11.2 and the following two packages: kernel-desktop-2.6.31.12-0.2.1 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-195.36.15_2.6.31.5_0.1-11.1 I then upgraded to openSUSE 11.3, with the following packages: kernel-desktop-2.6.34.4-0.1.1 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-256.53_k2.6.34.0_12-15.1 With this configuration the graphic display in KDE is very slow, even with Compiz disabled and all desktop effects turned off. It's possible to watch windows and widgets being painted as they pop up, or when switching virtual desktops. Meanwhile top showsthe Xorg process is consuming a lot of CPU -- up to 100%. Performance gets progressively worse the longer the system has been running; after several hours it's nearly unusable and must be rebooted. I tried upgrading to kernel-desktop-2.6.36-rc4.18.1 from the Kernel_HEAD repository and reinstalling the Nvidia drivers from scratch, but this didn't solve the problem. I downgraded back to the 2.6.34 kernel, and tried the following workaround, which has been working so far: 1. Run the command "nvidia-settings -a PixmapCacheRoundSizeKB=16000" 2. Create a cron job as follows: 0,20,40 * * * * DISPLAY=:0 nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=0 >&/dev/null; DISPLAY=:0 nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=1 >&/dev/null Reproducible: Always This bug has been discussed extensively on various Internet forums.
