After leaving my machine alone and trying to wake it up from the blank screen, it happens frequently that gnome-shell locks up and I can't get back to my desktop. The clock is displayed in the middle of the screen, but no longer updates. The mouse pointer still moves but there's nothing I can do with it. The only way to recover my session from that point is to switch to a console, log in, run "killall -3 gnome-shell", then switch back to X. This only happens with the open-source radeon driver; I never experienced this problem when I was using the binary fglrx driver. I also never experienced this issue on systems with Intel or Nvidia graphics chips. So I rebuilt the driver with that commit backported: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:jdelvare:branches:openSUSE:13.1...
