[Bug 754697] New: i915 module turns the screen black till X starts
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754697 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754697#c0 Summary: i915 module turns the screen black till X starts Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lashkevi@landau.ac.ru QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0 Every time the i915 module is loaded (on boot or resume from hibernation) the screen become black till the X server launches. My computer is Toshiba Satellite L300-11E. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Turn on computer (better with splash=verbose) and wait for messages. 2. The kernel messages are going well, but as soon as i915 is loaded the screen becomes black till xdm (kdm,...) appears. As a control experiment you may turn set e.g. "nomodeset", which prevents loading the i915 module. In this case you can see all systemd/sysinit messages. Actual Results: The screen turns black till *dm launches. Expected Results: Systemd/sysinit messages or a splash screen depending on the "splash" parameter. By the way I think that this problem can be related with the problem that many icons and decoration elements turn black after hibernate/resume and sometimes even after screensaver launch. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754697 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754697#c1 --- Comment #1 from Michael Lashkevich <lashkevi@landau.ac.ru> 2012-03-30 18:26:28 UTC --- I found that the screen returns to life as soon as I attach an external monitor to my laptop. As a workaround I added the "enable_mtrr_cleanup" and "nopat" kernel options (I found this recipe somewhere on the net). It works for boot, but not for resume from hibernation. By the way, the screen remains blank forever, if I do not use the "intel" xorg driver (which seems buggy). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I do not understand the reason. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Moreover, the workaround "enable_mtrr_cleanup nopat" does not work any longer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I tried to boot with kernel param "i915.modeset=0" , it doesn't occure the issue again but can't detect second monitor. so I have to go for ""i915.modeset=1",in this mode , sometimes black sceen too, but can detect second monitor. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It works. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
