[Bug 794444] New: 12.3 milestone 2 - Kmix tray icon does not change with volume buttons
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=794444 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=794444#c0 Summary: 12.3 milestone 2 - Kmix tray icon does not change with volume buttons Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 12.3 Milestone 1 Platform: i686 OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: hrm_sfo@sonic.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.11 An online update took the system from 12.3 milestone 1 to 2. Now the Kmix tray icon does not change when adjusting sound with the laptop volume buttons. When using the physical buttons, the sound does get louder and softer, and mutes and unmutes correctly, but the tray icon does not change. If I click the tray icon and change settings, the icon changes (1 to 3 lines depending on volume, no lines for mute). In 12.2 the icon changes with adjustments made via the buttons. I am pretty sure the icon showed button-push changes in 12.3 milestone 1, too. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Change sound volume up or down, or mute or unmute, using the laptop buttons 2. 3. Actual Results: Sound changes correctly in response to button pushes, but the icon does not indicate the changes. Expected Results: number of lines in the icon change with button pushes. It even gets confused inside 12.2 without reinstalling the operating system. Do you have more than one audio card? (My laptop has HDMI, which I never use but it's the default after system installation, it has internal Intel audio where the speakers and the analog headset outlets are connected, and last not least I use different USB headsets from time to time). I'm not sure how the tray icon applet decides, which audio device to display, but obviously it can display only one of them. Actually I'm not even sure how it should do it in a perfect world, if you have configured some sounds on the speaker (e.g. phone ringing) but others in the headset (phone conservation). But when things are screwed up it has helped to disable all but one audio device (e.g. in pavucontrol application) and restart the session. Are you sure you are seeing a regression or just the "usual" confusion with more than one audio device? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=794444 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=794444#c3 --- Comment #3 from Howard Moreland <hrm_sfo@sonic.net> 2013-01-01 00:55:42 UTC --- The tray icon behavior seems to be a regression in OpenSuSE 12.3 milestone 2. And it is not only the icon; the on-screen display does not pop-up when using the buttons. Things work correctly in 12.2 on this hardware (IBM ThinkPad X-41, default KDE 4.8.5 installation, kernel Linux 3.4.11-2.16-pae i686, 32-bit). I am pretty sure it worked OK in milestone 1, but I overwrote that with milestone 2, so cannot verify. In 12.2, the icon shows sound changes made with the hardware buttons - muting on and off, volume up and down. Also, when changing sound with the buttons, a bar graph pops up showing volume level and muting state. In 12.3, the sound changes correctly in response to the buttons, but the icon does not change and the on-screen display does not appear. There is only one audio device, identified in both 12.2 and 12.3 M2 as: 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller Configured as sound card number 0 Driver snd-intel8x0 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The buttons do correctly change the sound, there is just no visible indication of the changes. 12.2 does show changes via graphics. I changed the KMix shortcut actions from default to custom - none for all three buttons. However, the buttons still did control sound. I set them back to default and they work but still with no graphic indication. In KMix configuration, show OSD is checked. I unchecked it, applied, checked again, applied. Still no OSD pops up when buttons are pushed. This is on the ThinkPad X-41, 32-bit, now 12.3 beta 1, default KDE installation 4.9.97, kernel Linux 3.7.1-1-desktop. KDE Bug 206724 is not present on this system. With KMix applet open, the buttons do change the sound, but no visible indication. I'll boot to 12.2 and test the KMix shortcuts there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The Global Keyboard Shortcuts for Kmix 4.1 looked the same as for 12.3 beta 1 which has KMix Version 4.3 Kmix 4.1 has no check box to enable / disable OSD. In 12.2, I switched the shortcuts from default to custom - none for all three buttons. The buttons still changed sound correctly, but the OSD did not pop up. However, when playing an mp3 file in Kaffeine with the custom shortcuts, pushing the buttons gave a text message of the volume level in the Kaffeine window. In 12.3 beta 1, playing the mp3 file in Kaffeine with the custom-none shortcuts, pushing the buttons showed nothing in the Kaffeine window. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is still on the ThinkPad X-41, 32-bit, now 12.3 RC1, default KDE installation: Linux 3.7.6-1.2-pae, KDE 4.10.00 "release 1". Now KMix is Version 4.3, Using KDE Development Platform 4.10.00 "release 1" The Global Keyboard Shortcuts and KMix configuration are correct. The behavior was exactly the same as for my original user: buttons do adjust sound, but no OSD. I even logged in as root (I know, bad technique) and got the same behavior. It's probably something now unusual in this fairly old laptop that got left behind in kernel updates going from 12.2 to 12.3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
