[Bug 462478] New: kdm fails to load on startup
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=462478 Summary: kdm fails to load on startup Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: suse+build@de-korte.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Upon startup, the GUI (KDE4/kdm) fails to load, although the output of the startup script indicates 'done'. After logging in as 'root' and running 'rckdm restart', it works again and I can login as usual. It seems to timeout somehow, but I fail to see where. What logs/configfiles are needed to find the cause of this? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

IIRC we had reports against NVIDIA driver, where even a ServerTimeout of 60s were required. Harald?
see Bug #448739: not neccessarily 60 seconds, but longer than 30s because of some kernel problems hanging/looping in open("/dev/nvidia") for the 177.82 nvidia driver -- so 60s is a good choice and works for me [TM]. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Most likely it's the initialization done in mga_hal module, a binary blob by Matrox, which you need for MergedFB (=Dualhead) support on Matrox cards, which takes that long. Could you verify by adding
Option "NoHal"
That solved the problem of kdm not starting up without overriding ServerTimeout. It seems to have a side effect of slightly changing the timing however, so my monitor started to complain about unsupported vertical timing. This is probably related to the Matrox G550.
to 'Section "Device"' of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. BTW, please attach your xorg.conf file.
Done. Although I doubt this is relevant anymore, since this seems to go into the direction of increasing the default ServerTimeout to 60 seconds, which suits me fine too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Problem seems to be fixed by changing ServerTimeout in /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc from the default of 15 to 30 seconds.
A much better solution for people using Matrox graphics adapters that are suffering from the same problem is to try to upgrade the BIOS of the graphics adapter. In my Matrox G550 (and also the G450), the latest version available from the Matrox website added VBE/DDC capabilities, which dramatically speeds up loading the X server (from about 20-25 seconds to almost immediate). It looks like probing for VBE/DDC (and failing) is causing loooooooong delays (twice, actually). Option "NoHal" will remove one of these and makes the X server barely meet the default 15 seconds ServerTimeout. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
