[Bug 506896] New: Add ext3grep to openSUSE basesystem
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=506896 Summary: Add ext3grep to openSUSE basesystem Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rsantos@ruisantos.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- As you guys know, recovering accidentally deleted files from an ext3 filesystem was almost impossible until a few months ago... I've used the ext3grep program to recover a few accidentally deleted mail dirs for few users at the company I work at. I've had 100% success at it using the referred program. If possible, please include the ext3grep program on both future openSUSE's Basesystem and on the recovery system. Same as with Contrib: I'm neither willing to live with an outdated version just for the sake of it nor do I have the time and the knowledge to backport security fixes.
Fair enough. However, I wouldn't expect much work with maintenance of this package.
OTOH I would love to see some "Utilities" repository on OBS for small command line utilities so several CLI apps that are now maintained in various homes can be moved there (like ext3grep).
How would that repository differ from Contrib? Perhaps this should be discussed on opensuse-contrib mailing list.
According to darix it should go into the "filesystems" repo but adding that might cause other issues since zypp probably would / could update several other core components thanks to bug #503276 so that weren't "optimal" either.
Nevertheless, its development didn't move that much in the past months so feel free to take it from my home (since it's the current release) if you are willing to maintain while complying with necessary standards.

Perhaps someone would be willing to push ext3grep to Factory? Or co-maintain - I could also participate...
Rui: since Factory is now open, I could help you with pushing the package to Factory if you are interested.
Really no interest? :-/ -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi Petr,
Sorry for the long "no reply"... long story... Same here :)
I would have no problem in maintaining this package. Great!
Although I've build RPM's for several openSUSE distributions, I've never maintained one on an openSUSE repo. Could you please put me in the right direction on how to do it (registration, literature, etc... ) ?
Well, for now the package lives in Contrib [1]. So the rules described in that link apply. Feel free to add yourself as a bugowner/maintainer in the build service (I suppose you already have an BS account). You should also consider subscribing to opensuse-contrib@opensuse.org mailing list. Being a maintainer involves updating the package to new upstream versions, fixing bugs, fixing eventual build failures etc. Contrib is a good place to start with maintaining the package, but after 11.2 is out, we could push the package to openSUSE Factory to appear in 11.3. I hope that the information above will help you with the task - if not, feel free to ask me directly via email or (better) on some of the mailing lists listed above or IRC. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
