Can you install with brokenmodules=ata_piix?
I have tried with brokenmodules=ata_piix and the installation goes to the end. The module loaded is piix. Thanks for the suggestion I have already tried brokenmodules=piix without success. Well, the idea was to enable ahci in the bios and use the 'brokenmodules=ata_piix' option during installation. It might be that ata_piix has problems with AHCI mode here.
Just to clarify. I enabled AHCI mode in the bios and used brokenmodules=ata_piix during installation. There was a message about: module loaded piix. I attach the result of lspci -nnvvv. I have no boot dmesg because the system does not boot. I have the hard disk on /dev/sdb and couldn't convince the installer to put the MBR on it. #1 rmmod piix doesn't work because the module is busy. #2I have changed the menu.lst file and added brokenmodules=piix. to the kernel line. Just one question. You say broken_modules is that correct? When I use brokenmodules=piix and boot the piix module is still loaded. lsmod |grep -i piix piix 28036 0 [permanent] ide_core 174720 3 ide_cd,piix,ide_disk After modprobe -v ata_piix I got: install /sbin/modprobe ahci 2>&1 |:; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ata_piix insmod /lib/modules/2.6.18.1-7-default/kernel/drivers/ata/ata_piix.ko and lsmod |grep -i piix ata_piix 35080 0 piix 28036 0 [permanent] libata 142624 2 ata_piix,ahci ide_core 174720 3 ide_cd,piix,ide_disk With respect to the IDENTITY message it's strange. The motherboard has several SATA controllers. There are three managed by ICH7 directly, another managed by a JMICRON "chipset" and other two managed by a (I'm not 100% sure) REALTEK "chipset". This last two are really some sort of extension of the fourth SATA port of ICH7 and are intended to build a RAID. If you plug a disk in one of this ports the bios detect it as an external disk. I am puzzled by the message about a sdb disk it seems that the kernel thinks that there is a disk plugged in one of this REALTEK ports. Actually the IDENTITY message appears in ata2 but the only disk in the system is on ata4. cat /proc/scsi/scsi says: Attached devices: Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 Vendor: ATA Model: ST3160023AS Rev: 3.18 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05 Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 Vendor: ATA Model: Config Disk Rev: RGL1 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05 I hope I am not too confusing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Thanks. ata_piix worked perfectly there. You should be able to use your dvd-ram as /dev/sr0. If you have any problem with that please file a bug. Now... I need to know why the boot cd is behaving differntly.
Actually I am using a boot DVD.
While the installation screen is blocked on ata_piix, switch to virtual console 4 by pressing alt-F4. The console shows kernel messages and the kernel should be saying something about ata_piix. Otherwise, just jot down ~15lines and post it.
To my surprise the problem has vanished. I started the installation and went downstairs to get the camera after having pressed alt-F4. I was distracted and went upstairs half an hour later to see that the installation has continued. After trying again I measured around 15 minutes between the message about loading ata_piix and the screen to select language. There are messages about timeouts which I could not fully read because the were scrolling quickly. I am really sorry for the inconveniences caused, but it's the first time it takes so long to load a module. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
