https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=825390 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=825390#c0 Summary: Launching firefox in a Terminal window spews cryptic messages onto terminal; & won't goto webpages Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.1 Milestone 0 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: suse@tlinx.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.28) Gecko/20120306 Firefox/3.6.28 I remotely log in to my suse system via a terminal window (SecureCRT). I launched firefox 21 and get a bunch of messages with many looking like errors. Which of these do I pay attention to and most of all, why are they not going off into a log file? Many of these look similar to messages I see on firefox's internal console -- it's internal log. if I launch FF from a console window on Windows, I see no messages in the window I launch from -- as they are all FF messages they go into FF's log. But some of these messages look like they are coming from system libs that FF uses. Shouldn't those be going off into a system log somewhere? Which of these are real errors (the one labeled "critical"?) and how should they be fixed? Certainly this isn't normal function for starting a browser, very few users would have any clue about what these messages are about. None of them seem to tell me why my browser no longer connects to the internet (which it used to do last month). I have also tried setting them to the squid proxy on the same host (which I would prefer) but that doesn't work either. The first message that comes out above seems very odd. It's asserting that the sys_page_size should be 0 and that fails? It seems very odd that it would want a 0-length sys-page-size, OR that it would get one. Note... even when things are working, it still spews a bunch of those messages out on the starting terminal... Not capturing those somewhere seems wrong -- many of them seem like debug messages? -- but messages that would still go in a log somewhere? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. login remotely using a console or tty window and ssh; Since this is a closed network, DISPLAY=<remotehost>:0 , (i.e. doesn't get redirected through the ssh-session to go through another encrypt-decrypt cycle). 2. start firefox from the console window -- I was able to just type firefox. 3. Enjoy the messages (whether it connects or not -- I haven't tried debugging that extensively, so not sure why it wouldn't connect, but regardless, the messsages shouldn't be dumped on the user's terminal -- how do I know which are real errors and if any of them are the cause of my not being able to connect?) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Basically all the component and JS errors are not in the console output of Firefox unless configured somehow. Unfortunately I'm not sure which configuration that might be.
Note -- I am talking about the FF internal console, not the system console. This is the default on other platforms -- maybe it should be the default here as well **OR**... have an "Application Log" where all these messages from various applications are recorded -- but putting them out on a terminal that MAY or may not be visible? Might as well dump them to dev/null.
Some output is expected:
(process:53856): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size == 0' failed ==== FF isn't the only one giving out GLIB messages -- they should be going to some logfile if they are important... but otherwise, it looks like debugging information wasn't turned off when compiling it.
Not sure about this one.
(firefox:53856): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: networkIdsList argument is NULL.
Somehow expected since you are not in a real remote session. ==== This comes up alot and is a big problem. Since my Session has been "real", for 2 decades, and now someone comes along and tells me I don't have a "real" remote session? This is a problem for anyone who's sole use of this product is via a remote system logging in and using 'X'. I even had the KDE-desktop running -- and it gave all sorts of similar errors -- but normally I don't run it because it locks up and isn't very responsive.
But this whole issue of being in a 'real session' is a problem since I'm always in a real session. My workstation won't boot up correctly if the server isn't active and the server's only accelerated graphical output device is on the workstation.
Have you configured any environment variables to control that? Like described here: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Share_certificates_between_applications_or_whole...
I don't have any certificates to share that I know of. I've always just used the system default ones. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=825390 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=825390#c3 --- Comment #3 from L. A. Walsh <suse@tlinx.org> 2013-06-18 04:50:34 PDT --- Note, AFAIK, this whole business of a 'session' has only been a problem since factory...or 12.3... Before that -- there were no error messages with any of my apps I used about missing sessions... But now I can't launch a 'Terminal' (xfce-terminal) window w/o getting Session problems... that never used to be the case... So someone has recently redefined "real session" to exclude the common remote usage case. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
