[Bug 1205742] New: Plasma desktop loses window titlebars (and other things)
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1205742 Bug ID: 1205742 Summary: Plasma desktop loses window titlebars (and other things) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.4 Hardware: 64bit OS: openSUSE Leap 15.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE Workspace (Plasma) Assignee: opensuse-kde-bugs@opensuse.org Reporter: robnk@xtra.co.nz QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Recent update to Plasma 5.26.3 level in Leap 15.4 via yast resulted in a seriously unworkable desktop. The desktop and panel appear to come up OK, but then, among other things: - No window titlebars and no means of moving windows either with mouse or from keyboard - No virtual desktops - attempt to re-establish them via System Settings results in error "requesting information from the compositor" - Click-to-focus doesn't work. Unresponsive. Can't grab windows by any means. Application shutdown limited to Ctl-Q These behaviours and others appeared after the above update on a running system a couple of days ago. I've also restored the system from a prior full system backup and applied the update again. Same result. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From what repo did you upgrade 15.4 to 5.26.3? Standard 15.4 repos only have 5.24.4.
From the repository at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks5/openSUSE_Leap_15.... I know thats a departure from standard and is frowned upon by purists, but Ive been using this (and the companion advanced repos) for updates in Leap and its predecessors for more than 20 years. If using them is a path to disaster and they should not be used, Ive always wondered why they are provided publicly at all. Indeed, in all that time any glitches have been rare and the solutions trivial. Except, apparently, for this one, which is well above my pay grade. Unlike you and others Im no expert, just a user novice at the elementary level. Although I have recorded a sizeable trove of useful diagnostics for openSUSE combed from the Internet across the years, theres now the twofold problem of finding the appropriate ones among the many, and remembering what they mean. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

You can try to run "kwin_x11" manually and/or look at "systemctl --user status plasma-kwin_x11.service".
kwin_x11 returns:
kwin_x11: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libkwin.so.5: undefined symbol: drmModeFormatModifierBlobIterNext
That means you did not switch over all packages to the KDE repos. You *must* set them as higher priority (lower value) than other repos and run "zypper -v dup --from <KDE:Frameworks repo name>". -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thank you. All good now. I did it using the Yast2 GUI by reselecting the "Switch systems packages to the versions in this repository" for the relevant repositor(ies). This which marked a small number of additional packages for update, and it worked. So it seems that somewhere along the line the switch to those repositories that I'd previously selected had stopped working properly. We live and learn. I'm now a happy camper and I do appreciate your expert help. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
