[Bug 241983] New: KDE deletion failed: Creating folders is not supported with protocol trash.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=241983 Summary: KDE deletion failed: Creating folders is not supported with protocol trash. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rmatov101@charter.net QAContact: qa@suse.de I tried to delete whole directory using Konqueror, and got error: Creating folders is not supported with protocol trash. Deletion failed. There is no alternative way to remove folders. Single files can be deleted. There is no permission problems to remove directory using Midnight Commander, so there is workaround to perform deletion, but GUI will not do that and for all new users GUI is the only way they know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I wanted to remove them later, but it didn't worked. The directory was listed in Konqueror as: system:/media/sda1/Linux/Documents/<one level more> The last entry <one level more> was removed using mc. To make sure that it is not something with USB, I changed to home directory, I guess in the same window and repeated attempt to delete something there and got the same result, but to be honest, now I can't reproduce that. I deleted 2 directories one on USB stick, the other in home and there was no message as above. Error was spotted in the time I was looking why automatic mounting leaves subdirectories in /media directory after I pull the plug of USB storage devices and there was quite a few directories. The only thing that is different now is that "Do Nothing" is selected as default action for USB storage, so there is no "Open in new window" that I selected when error appeared. One thing that seems to be unusual is that USB memory stick is mounted twice in 2 directories. One is normal storage "KINGSTON U3" and the other is "U3 System" and in Konqueror it appears as CD drive. I guess there is something in MBR of memory stick that tells so. This is part of ll output: drwxr-xr-x 4 rajko root 16384 Dec 31 1969 KINGSTON U3 dr-xr-xr-x 2 rajko 401 2048 Jul 16 2006 U3 System where you can see strange 401 group for U3 System, but that is not the one that I tried to remove, and as mentioned previously manual removal using Midnight Commander was working. I hope that this can help you to give me directions where to go from here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

One step back please! What you're just saying is that your computer behaves completly havoc.
Do I? It seems to me as pretty good old computer. I was just researching someones complaint on very long period to mount USB memory stick and stumbled over trash protocol.
I think it's fair to claim that these trash protocol weiredness is the least of your problems.
Problem is that it existed, and now I can't reproduce it. I don't know in what moment I got it. Playing with USB devices is not what I usually do, and this time I went as far to see /dev/sdfX listed, but that is cleared after reboot, i.e. boot scripts take care of that.
Did you do some memory check lately?
No visible reason for check. Recent mouse problem that was reported as a bug and closed very fast, was probably dust on USB connectors, that made me think that I have software problem, as 2 USB mice showed the same behavior, but PS/2 didn't and then it disappeared when I changed some xorg.conf parameters, but in the same time reconnected mouse, which is not good when troubleshooting, but I did it. Worse than that, without further checks, reported a bug. Bad day.
Or checked kernel messages? I'm just doing that. What I should look for? I see as unusual only kernel rejects for dead devices, that seems to be cleared by hald unmounting them, except for some partitions on USB hard disk. That I can look tomorrow, now is late.
The dr-xr-xr-x 2 rajko 401 2048 Jul 16 2006 U3 System is probably because there is some software preinstalled, and it seems that it introduces itself as CD drive, how that can happen, you probably know better than I do. The only weird thing is group 401 that I can't understand. This is a usb-stick with two partitions on different devices as sr0 (detected as cdrom device with iso9660) and sda1 (with vfat). This is a hardware/kernel problem, we know such hardware and we have such usb-stick already here.
