I tried the latest (185.XX) binary-driver from nvidia, which allows now for proper resuming. The earlier version (tried 173.XX and 180.XX didn't do the trick). They seemingly have their own magic for the initialisation of their cards. Do you want to consider the bug closed, as there is now a solution to the initial problem of the system not resuming (even if it is not open-source), or do you want to investigate further?
