[Bug 583816] New: "Root Terminal" menu item does not work - erro message of Could not launch 'Root Terminal' Failed to execute child process "gksu" (No such file or directory)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=583816 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=583816#c0 Summary: "Root Terminal" menu item does not work - erro message of Could not launch 'Root Terminal' Failed to execute child process "gksu" (No such file or directory) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: badstuff9@msn.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100214 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.8 Fresh installation of openSUSE 11.2. GNOME desktop environment. In the "Applications" menu, in one of the submenus is "Root Terminal" Running "Root Terminal" produced this error message: Could not launch 'Root Terminal' Failed to execute child process "gksu" (No such file or directory) The "Root Terminal" menu item is trying to run this command: gksu /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator However, it appears that gksu is no longer part of openSUSE. Also, the file x-terminal-emulator does not exist. Either "Root Terminal" should not be installed within GNOME in openSUSE, or, the command should be altered, perhaps to something like this: gnomesu /usr/bin/gnome-terminal Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. I marked this as an "Easy workaround..." However, when you see the error message, you have no idea what is wrong, what it is trying to tell you. So, there may be others like me who will spend lots of time trying to figure out what is wrong. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you drag the application launcher in a terminal? You should get the path of the .desktop file for it, and then run "rpm -q --whatprovides /path/you/got" so we can know what package provides this launcher.
I did that. It says, "no package provides". -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So what is the path of the desktop file?
If I'm understanind correctly what you're asking for, it is this: ~/.local/share/applications/gksu.desktop -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

~/.local/share/applications/gksu.desktop
This is a .desktop file that is local to your user, and it doesn't come from openSUSE. Just remove this file and it will not appear in the menu anymore. (or make it use gnomesu instead of gksu) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't know, but it certainly sounds like a file that you created in some way while using Ubuntu.
That's an interesting thought. Is it possible that Ubuntu and/or I created it, and then when openSUSE was installed, it stayed there? (I think that is what you may be proposing.) I didn't realize that could happen. I thought that if I did a fresh installation of openSUSE - which included accepting its default recommendations regarding partitioning the hard drive - that all previous configuration type things would be gone. Perhaps that is not the case? If it is not, then that explains matters. (Although, I say that is something that should be made clear in the installation process, a process which I thought was aimed at non-experts like me who would not know such things.) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
