[Bug 796917] New: System is trying to access floppy while installing upgrading kernel or configuring bootloader
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=796917 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=796917#c0 Summary: System is trying to access floppy while installing upgrading kernel or configuring bootloader Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: srid@rkmail.ru QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux x86_64) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.12 I am using openSUSE 12.2 on a machine with a floppy drive. And when it comes to installing kernel updates or changing bootloader's configuration system starts trying to access floppy drive. It may be VERY slow process, because come floppy drives have really big timeout before reporting read error. In fact, on my it takes more than 1 minute for YaST to stop trying to access floppy on my computer. Everything worked fine in 12.1 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. I also noticed that /dev/fd0 is mentioned as "other boot partition" in "bootloader" section in YaST. Changing this does not help. Getting rid the floppy drive is not a solution for me, because I need it for my XT machine :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Michael, is this grub2's config script?
Yes. It's caused by /boot/grub2/device.map had (fd0) entries thus when running grub2-probe will try to open it. A quick fix would be delete that entry if that map entry is not interested. I'll try fix in new installation (kind of workaround in pbl to not put the device.map to default path and only used for internal parse ..), but I'm afraid that it cannot be fixed via package upgrade as we cannot know the installed /boot/grub2/device.map and (fd) user is using it or not ... :( Iakov, can you help to confirm the result of removing the line (fd0) .... in your /boot/grub2/device.map ? Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks.
Sorry making no reply for a such long time, I should read letters more careful. Yes, removing (fd0) from /boot/grub2/device.map helped. grub2-install does not try to do something awful with my floppy drive now, but yast still does. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
