[Bug 1052532] New: openSUSE not install-able on Thinkpad T470p
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1052532 Bug ID: 1052532 Summary: openSUSE not install-able on Thinkpad T470p Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: richard@nod.at QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- I'm trying to install openSUSE on my new Thinkpad T470p but it fails in two ways. 1. Both openSUSE-Leap-42.3-DVD-x86_64.iso and openSUSE-Leap-42.3-NET-x86_64.iso are not bootable from any USB device when UEFI is enabled (secure boot disabled). Forcing the BIOS to legacy mode makes them boot. 2. When I install LEAP 42.3 in BIOS legacy mode, the installation works fine but after a reboot openSUSE is not being booted. The BIOS ignores the disk. My disk is a NVMe SSD. openSUSE installs grub to the /dev/nvmeXXX device, I've double checked. I tried multiple different USB devices with no success. Fedora 26, on the other hand, boots fine from the USB device, also with secure boot enabled, and after the installation Fedora is also bootable from the NVMe. What kind of information can I provide to figure why openSUSE does not boot on my laptop? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

For the first case, it would help if you can write what exactly your pc write to you when you try to use it from USB. E.g. you can try to photo screen if there is error. For the second case, we again need details why it does not boot, what it writes? And ideally if you can get from disk content of directory /var/log/YaST2 where should be details about installation process ( you can e.g. mount disk from live CD ). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please see the attached files. The BIOS does not print any error messages. In UEFI mode it seems like the USB drive is not boot able. When I select it, the boot prompt immediately returns again. In legacy mode the drive is bootable but after a reboot booting from the nvme disk does not work. Again, the boot screen returns after 2-3 seconds when it select the disk. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

You might want to try creating a GPT on the devices. This helps on my Thinkpad E470. To create a GPT do the following, assuming the boot media is at `/dev/sdX`: # gdisk /dev/sdX GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.8 Partition table scan: MBR: MBR only BSD: not present APM: not present GPT: not present *************************************************************** Found invalid GPT and valid MBR; converting MBR to GPT format in memory. THIS OPERATION IS POTENTIALLY DESTRUCTIVE! Exit by typing 'q' if you don't want to convert your MBR partitions to GPT format! *************************************************************** Command (? for help): p Disk /dev/sdX: 15138816 sectors, 7.2 GiB Logical sector size: 512 bytes Disk identifier (GUID): BAFE831A-9632-464D-B919-E70907745BFA Partition table holds up to 128 entries First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 15138782 Partitions will be aligned on 4-sector boundaries Total free space is 6260593 sectors (3.0 GiB) Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name 1 4020 11831 3.8 MiB EF00 EFI System 2 11832 8882175 4.2 GiB 0700 Microsoft basic data Command (? for help): w Final checks complete. About to write GPT data. THIS WILL OVERWRITE EXISTING PARTITIONS!! Do you want to proceed? (Y/N): Y OK; writing new GUID partition table (GPT) to /dev/sdX. The operation has completed successfully. # sync -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
