Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: poolbarde@web.de QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0 I'm trying to install opensuse 12.2 on my new Notebook ASUS F201E with preinstalled Windows 8. Because this Notebook does not have an internal DVD drive, I have connected an external one using USB 2.0 connector. In the UEFI BIOS, i disabled 'Secure Boot Control'. Further I have enabled 'Launch CSM'. The hard disk is using GPT partition table. Using the x64 installation dvd of opensuse DVD, I can choose the normal and the UEFI boot option. But both are running into problems. X64 DVD, UEFI Boot ================== 1. ELILO is started 2. Last line in the boot messages is 'Activating USB devices...' 3. Then a blue screen with ncurses window appears telling 'Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive'. On console F3 I can see: ... Hardware detection finished insmod /modules/usbhid.ko insmod /modules/usb-storage.ko scanning devices dud url: disk:/?device=*usb*&all=1&quiet=1 Reading driver update: disk:/?device=*usb*&all=1&quiet=1 rescanning devices url mount: trying disk:/?device=*usb* No new driver updates found. repository: looking for cd:/ rescanning devices repository: not found no openSUSE repository found Automaitc setup not possible. On console F4 there are lot of lines with: BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found EDD information not available. Seems my DVD drive was lost, so the installation process cant access the DVD anymore. X64 DVD, normal Boot (not UEFI) =============================== 1. The graphical grub boot menu appears and I select 'Installation'. I already tried the 'No ACPI' and 'No KMS' boot option, but installation always hangs. At least using 'No KMS' and 'No ACPI' I was able to see the full printouts on the screen as you'll read in the next lines. 2. Here are the last console printouts I can see: ... VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6 Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions: 0800 488386584 sda driver: sd 0801 307200 sda1 ... 0802 921600 sda2 ... 0803 131072 sda3 ... 0804 195354624 sda4 ... 0806 20981760 sda6 ... So how could I install opensuse 12.2 on my Noteboook? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Please see 'Details'. Actual Results: Installation hangs because repository is not found. Expected Results: Installation shall find the repository and continue normal processing. Creation of the USB stick was done with: dd if=openSUSE-12.2-DVD-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdh bs=10M My notebook only provides the normal boot (not UEFI) for this USB stick. Anyhow, installation is started successfully! So why the USB stick can be detected, but my USB DVD drive gets lost? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And I found a difference to DVD. - The DVD can be booted using UEFI and using BIOS (CSM mode). - The USB-Stick only supports the BIOS boot option. So when the CSM mode is disabled, using USB-Stick to install opensuse ist no possible. For sure, boot loder is a big issue, because I can only get the notebook work when using UEFI boot. But using the stick, linux is installed in BIOS/MBR mode. That does not fit together. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=801348 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=801348#c4 --- Comment #4 from Hendrik Müller <poolbarde@web.de> 2013-02-02 00:00:55 UTC --- I found a workaround how I'm be able to install opensuse 12.2: 1. Create a small partition on the hard disk (in my case using GPT). 2. Copy content of installation DVD into that partition. 3. Boot from DVD using UEFI boot (CSM mode disabled). 4. Installation will fail, because DVD is not found. We end up in the ncursed environment with message 'Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive'. 5. Click 'Back'. 6. Choose language. 7. Choose KEyboard layout. 8. Chate 'Start Installation' 9. Choose 'Start Installation/Update' 10. Choose 'Harddisk' 11. Select the partition you created before. 12. As Source directory choose '/' 13. Installation starts now. 14. When choosing the partition layout, opensuse always delete my EFI partition where my other bootloaders are located (further it also deletes all my recovery partitions - in my case 2). Without that partition my UEFI BIOS does not know what to do. So we need to take care, that non of the existing partitions (that I want to keep) are deleted. Mount the UEFI partition (sda1 in my case) to /boot/efi directory. Now installation runs and I'm able to boot windows or linux system using the UEFI boot manager. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's related to the notebook hardware. All USB connectors on the left side of the housing are working fine (there I used to plug the USB-Stick). But the USB connectors on the right side of the housing are not working under Linux (there I have had connected the DVD drive). Maybe different USB chips are used, I need to find out. But installation works fine when using one of the USB connectors on the left housing side. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
