It is at most an enhancement request - provided the requested software is really free software. See https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Printing (excerpt) ---------------------------------------------------------- Of course only really free software can be accepted in the "Printing" project. In particular printer driver software which is not 100% free software cannot be accepted regardless how nice it would be when this or that awkward printer model would work. We will not risk any legal issue for openSUSE and its users and contributors when software where the legal state is not clear would be accepted. ---------------------------------------------------------- Please provide sufficient information wherefrom to get official sources for the requested software and preferably check that those software is really free software. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(it is totally menaingless if some parts of that software are 'LGPL' to be free software all and everything of that software must be free). Ulf Michel, it seems you have epson-inkjet-printer-201208w-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm installed on your machine. Check the files of that package regarding any kind of non-free license. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Recommended driver: epson-201208w (driver home page http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX) Epson Inkjet Printer Driver for Linux Supplier: Seiko Epson Corporation (this printer's manufacturer) License: LGPL and SEIKO EPSON CORPORATION SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT (non-free software, show license text) User support: Seiko Epson Corporation (voluntary) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This proves that the epson-inkjet-printer-201208w driver from Epson is non-free software which means it cannot be included in openSUSE. Therefore this request in invalid for openSUSE. For user support questions with this driver you need to contact Seiko Epson Corporation. I don't know if the Epson XP-800 may also work with a free driver. Because there is no other driver listed at http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Epson/Epson-XP-800_Series I assume the Epson XP-800 is not supported by a free driver. Regarding printer drivers in general you may have a look at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Purchasing_a_Printer_and_Compatibility and http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Printer_buying_guide versus http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:GDI_Printers For more technical information you may have a look at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Information_for_Printer_Manufacturers_Regarding_L... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=845491 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=845491#c5 --- Comment #5 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@suse.com> 2013-10-15 10:46:29 CEST --- The difference is: For the printers that are listed in printer setup tools in openSUSE there is a printer driver provided by openSUSE which means there is a free software printer driver. According to what I wrote in the above comment#3 it seems the Epson XP-800 is not supported by a free driver which means there cannot be a printer driver provided by openSUSE which means the Epson XP-800 cannot be listed in printer setup tools out of the box in openSUSE. But when you download and install non-free printer driver software that is made in compliance how printer setup works with CUPS, then those printers that are supported by that driver software will also be listed in printer setup tools. For background information regarding how printer driver software is related to the printers that are listed in printer setup tools, see http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts_printing -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
