[Bug 273013] New: yast2-users attempts attempts to parse the package database everytime although I have not selected to install more stuff.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=273013 Summary: yast2-users attempts attempts to parse the package database everytime although I have not selected to install more stuff. Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: jsuchome@novell.com ReportedBy: judas_iscariote@shorewall.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com this is more or less the same usabilty issue of bug #266883 but in the yast2-users module.. when open it --> click "expert options" --> Authentication and user sources , the package database is attempted to be parsed right away..this is imho not the expected behaviuor.. what about parsing it when the user actually **wants** to configure i.e the samba authentication source and the needed packages are not installed ? ( user can be configuring NIS, LDAP or kerberos authentication sources but that does not neccesary mean they will need to install more software -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The problem is that if the package (e.g. yast2-samba-client) is not available at the source (= not possible to install it), its summary should not be shown in the dialog at all. That's why yast2-users always checks if the authentication modules are available. The only case it doesn't check package database is when all packages (yast2-ldap/nis/samba/kerberos-client) are already installed. So I think this is WONTFIX, unless we find better solution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The additional software we are looking for would be needed to do the configuration, it looks for appropriate YaST modules.
I see.
The problem is that if the package (e.g. yast2-samba-client) is not available at the source (= not possible to install it), its summary should not be shown in the dialog at all.
and what happends if the summary is shown anyway but it fails **just** when the user want to use it..(if the user will not need it, is pointless to have unneeded packages installed no ? ) saying "package foobar is not in the installation media" or something ?
That's why yast2-users always checks if the authentication modules are available.
I see the rationale, the main problem is that the package stuff is very slow and this tiny changes can produce a better "feeling" about the speed of yast to users.
So I think this is WONTFIX, unless we find better solution.
if you see the bug description, I filled this as an ENHACEMENT not as a bug ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
