[Bug 546120] New: Miscellaneous Rosegarden annoyances
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=546120 Summary: Miscellaneous Rosegarden annoyances Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 8 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: znmeb@cesmail.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-1.3 Firefox/3.5.3 I don't know how urgent this is going to be, but Rosegarden as shipped with openSUSE 11.2 has a number of annoying glitches: 1. On a default KDE install from the DVD, Rosegarden has no icon in the Applications menu. 2. Clicking on the "?" icon does not start the application. 3. From the command line, the path does not appear to be set: znmeb@AlgoCompSynth:~/Projects/AlgoCompSynth> rosegarden If 'rosegarden' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this: cnf rosegarden znmeb@AlgoCompSynth:~/Projects/AlgoCompSynth> cnf rosegarden Program 'rosegarden' is present in package 'rosegarden4', which is installed on your system. Absolute path to 'rosegarden' is '/opt/kde3/bin/rosegarden'. Please check your $PATH variable to see whether it contains the mentioned path. 4. When I start rosegarden with /opt/kde3/bin/rosegarden, an error dialog box "Couldn't start the sequencer" appears. 5. When I dismiss that message, I get the following warnings: Helper programs not found .. The following features will not be available: * Export and import of Rosegarden Project files * Notation previews through LilyPond .. you should install the following additional programs: * The Rosegarden Project Packager helper script * The Rosegarden LilyPondView helper script These do not appear to be available in the standard 11.2 repos, although I did manage to find them in the Packman repo. 6. Rosegarden seems to require the "jack" daemon to be running. Sometimes I get a message to that effect. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install 11.2 M8 with default KDE desktop 2. Install rosegarden4 3. Start rosegarden Actual Results: It took some hunting, but I did manage to get everything working. When I get a chance, I'll document what I did for the wiki. Expected Results: Just start up Rosegarden from the KDE menu and everything "just works". ;-) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't know how urgent this is going to be, but Rosegarden as shipped with openSUSE 11.2 has a number of annoying glitches:
1. On a default KDE install from the DVD, Rosegarden has no icon in the Applications menu.
I'll look into this I also don't have an icon anymore although it shows up in the menu editor.
2. Clicking on the "?" icon does not start the application.
This is most probably related to item 3 path issue.
3. From the command line, the path does not appear to be set:
znmeb@AlgoCompSynth:~/Projects/AlgoCompSynth> rosegarden If 'rosegarden' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this: cnf rosegarden znmeb@AlgoCompSynth:~/Projects/AlgoCompSynth> cnf rosegarden
Program 'rosegarden' is present in package 'rosegarden4', which is installed on your system.
Absolute path to 'rosegarden' is '/opt/kde3/bin/rosegarden'. Please check your $PATH variable to see whether it contains the mentioned path.
Can you post the output, from command line as user, from the commands : $PATH and whereis rosegarden
4. When I start rosegarden with /opt/kde3/bin/rosegarden, an error dialog box "Couldn't start the sequencer" appears. 5. When I dismiss that message, I get the following warnings: Helper programs not found ... The following features will not be available: * Export and import of Rosegarden Project files * Notation previews through LilyPond ... you should install the following additional programs: * The Rosegarden Project Packager helper script * The Rosegarden LilyPondView helper script
These do not appear to be available in the standard 11.2 repos, although I did manage to find them in the Packman repo.
Package lilypond is available in openSUSE:Factory:Contrib. The repository to add is : http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Factory:/Contrib/standar... I can't reproduce your lilypond problems with the package from the above repo.
6. Rosegarden seems to require the "jack" daemon to be running. Sometimes I get a message to that effect.
I also have the above message which I also get with the original upstream (from the rosegarden home site) but the developers are only working on the new qt4 version and not really interested in fixing minor bugs in 1.7.3. This is a quote from them concerning its release : "We hope to get an alpha release out within a month or so, and the final public release is scheduled for 2010-14-02" I'm busy building the svn version of rosegarden-qt4, which doesn't depend on kde3 anymore and seems to be functional, in my home project. I will post the repository where you can install it from to try out when it finally builds. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You shouldn't have to do things like this when you install a program from an official repository. I suspect that this is a bug in kdelibs3 where it doesn't add the kde3 path "/opt/kde3/bin/" to your path. I have a full kde3 installation alongside kde43 so I don't have this problem. I shall ask which package is supposed to supply this path when a kde3 dependent package is installed. You also shouldn't need a script to install the required dependencies such as lilypond. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
