[Bug 648719] New: Kernel upgrade causes laptop fans to stop working, CPU overheats
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=648719 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=648719#c0 Summary: Kernel upgrade causes laptop fans to stop working, CPU overheats Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: munguanaweza@netzero.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 SUSE/3.6.10-0.3.1 Firefox/3.6.10 When I upgrade from kernel 2.6.27.45-0.1.1-x86_64 to the latest kernel 2.6.27.48-0.3.1-x86-64 the laptop cooling fans don't work and the cpu overheats. Before the upgrade the fan came on at 55C and ran constantly after that, keeping the CPU temperature at about 40C. After the upgrade I fell asleep while listening to a streaming broadcast. I found the CPU temperature to be 93C two hours later when I woke up and found the cooling fans weren't running. I found the temperature from ~cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ0/temperature. I had experienced this problem several times as I have installed Opensuse 11.1 and upgraded the software. I was finally able to determine that it is the kernel upgrade that is causing the problem. My laptop is a Toshiba U505-S2950 with a dual Pentium t4300 CPU. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Upgrade the kernel to version 2.6.27.48-0.3.1-x86-64 2. 3. Actual Results: Cooling fans don't activate. Expected Results: Cooling fans should keep the CPU temperature at around 40C -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have found that if the CPU temperature rises above ~60C and then the other system is shutdown, and the laptop is then booted into openSuse the fans will not come on. In order to get the fans to turn on, the CPU has to cool to some low temperature which I have not yet been able to determine before the computer is turned back on. The CPU has to cool to about room temperature ~20C before restarting the laptop to expect the fans to come on again at 55C as the CPU heats up in openSuse. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With the new kernel on 11.1 the cooling fan operates without having to use the comment acpi_osi="Linux". But I don't think that works anyways, for the reasons that follow. I have two other linux distros on this laptop, xubuntu and elivecd. At the moment neither of those distros is useable on this laptop because the cooling fan doesn't operate with them. I have tried the comment acpi_osi="Linux" on both of them, and that doesn't work to get the fan running. The threads that I have been following to try to get the fan to work on those distros are: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-laptop-and-netbook-25/fan-acpi... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1036051 And a couple of other threads that are bookmarked on those systems, and not in opensuse which I am presently using. I have also tried to update the bios, which also had no effect after the update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't actuate the fans. I have to downgrade the kernel to 2.6.27.39 to get the fans working again. If I upgrade the kernel to 2.6.27.54-0.1 again, it works for a few days then doesn't work anymore. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok, does a kernel from kernel:head work for you. 2.6.38-rc is reported to fix similar issues. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_Factory/ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The fan also doesn't react to temperature, i.e.,if the cpu is hot it doesn't speed up to provide more cooling until the temperature drops down. Not trying to be facetious, but the fan works well with win7, so I don't think it is a hardware problem. The fan on opensuse 11.3 works the same as 11.4, as described above. I had already installed the latest HEAD Kernel prior to your suggestion on both versions of opensuse. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I then shut down the laptop and boot into either 11.3 or 11.4, the fans will come on immediately at the high temperature from before the shutdown, and they will stay on no matter what temperature the cpu is. They don't come on full blast, only at moderate speed. Eventually they cool the cpu down to about 48 degrees C. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
