Given that IDE disk support seems to be broken as well with Alpha2 a regular installation of 10.3 Alpha is no longer possible at all ?!? http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_10.3_dev [...] * ide-disk module does not get loaded at installation time. A "modprobe ide-disk" on commandline does workaround this issue. This affects all older IDE chipsets which are not supported via libata, like chipsets used in virtualisation applications (Bug #250241). [...] I wonder what's the use of such an Alpha release. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=251338 ------- Comment #13 from kasievers@novell.com 2007-03-23 08:22 MST ------- That may not happen with 2.6.21 and the current udev. We read the original ata_string by pass-through from the sd*-device. The scsi-stack truncates the longer ide-strings. The main question is why the installer uses the old ata-strings instead of the scsi-strings, which are the "real" id-links for the device? The ata-* stuff is only for old ide-drivers. And we no longer use these drivers, right? Udev just creates the ata-strings as a convenience, but nothing should rely on it, especially not in a new installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=251338 kasievers@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |NEEDINFO Info Provider| |fehr@novell.com ------- Comment #14 from kasievers@novell.com 2007-03-23 11:35 MST ------- Thomas, how does the installer select the type of the by-id link to use? On the usual box, there are ata-*-, scsi-*-, edd-*-links. If there are scsi-*-links present, they must be used. If only ata-*links are present, they can be used. And edd-*-links must be completely ignored, because they just ask for trouble. What logic selects these links? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=251338 fehr@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW Info Provider|fehr@novell.com | ------- Comment #15 from fehr@novell.com 2007-03-23 14:39 MST ------- Currently all links to a certain device are collected. If a link starts with edd it is ignored. If there there are still multiple links left except edd, the link used is random (maybe the lexicographically smallest, would need to look into sources). If YaST2 should prefer scsi- links over ata- links, this is not a problem and I can implement this on Monday. Generally if there are multiple links to the same device and YaST2 should prefer one over another someone needs to tell me. Is this change only needed for 10.3 or could this also happen in SLES10 SP1? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=251338 ------- Comment #16 from kasievers@novell.com 2007-03-23 16:21 MST ------- We provide the ata-*-links for existing setups which are converted to libata, but a new installations should use the "native" links of the disks. If we see scsi-* and ata-*-links for a sd* or sr* devices, the ata-* links are preferred. It would be nice for SLE10 SP1, when a new installation uses the libata drivers by default, not sure if that's the case.
