Computer immediatly reboot when trying boot from DVD. The same was CD image openSUSE-10.2-GM-i386-mini.iso So, I get CD image SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-i386-mini.iso Unpack openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-i386.iso to folder openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-i386 on /dev/hda3 Boot up from CD and begin installation from hard drive. I upgraded the system to 10.2 by copying the kernel & initrd from the DVD to the harddisk (as described in the openSuSE 10.2 "Start" manual) and booted into installation using the old grub. Installation went well, but after reboot starting with the updated grub didn't work (system reboot again). I then booted the system using a Knoppix-CD, edited the menu.lst to use text-mode grub and that works! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

See also bug 219316. The workaround is to avoid the boot graphics; pressing SHIFT with the DVD and disabling gfxmenu in grub. I don't have such a system here for debugging. Booting the image while holding down a SHIFT key, asks whether to load boot graphics. If I press Y then I'm asked whether or not to detect the display size. No matter what I enter at this stage (y/n), the system reboots immediately afterwards. In the computer magazine iX, I've read an article which reported an issue regarding OS/2 memory hole and booting Linux from CD, but when I boot your image in VMware, it boots properly although this memory hole was disabled by default. On the other hand, I didn't find such an option in the EPIA BIOS. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231104 ------- Comment #37 from snwint@novell.com 2007-03-01 07:50 MST ------- Ok, here the story so far. The problem with those VIA cpus is that the real to protected mode switch does not work properly. In particular it *looks* like it does not flush its prefetch queues which results in interpreting 32 bit opcodes as 16 bit codes and vice versa. The numbers are checkpoints. Each just a plain 'mov' instruction into display memory. So not much could go wrong there. '3' was the first after the real->pm switch and the fact that it's not shown indicates the instruction is not decoded properly. I *know* the program flow comes across this instruction as a result of test5, where I put just a 'hlt' there (halting the processor). After some time the prefetch queues are empty and the processor works normally (around checkpoints '4' or '5'). Unfortunately all crashes in the end because it has missed vital internal init functions on the way. :-( The various tests were attempts to trick the cpu into flushing its buffers. With only some success ('a'-'c' shown), but not '3'. Now, to test13: It will prompt for a number at the beginning. Only '0' to '3' are meaningful (all other keys are equal to '0'). With '0' it should print numbers as before with a delay after some of them. Which are shown? In particular: what about '2'? It will reboot/crash around number '9' at latest. By selecting '1' to '3' it will *probably* stop earlier (around '1', I think). The questions are: does it stop? And where? Please try '1' to '3' even if it reboots right away with '0'. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That's the problem. Can you turn off 'BIOS hole' or whatever it's called in your BIOS? I think I'll need to check the latest syslinux; IIRC it has been fixed there meanwhile. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Tejun reports that it still doesn't work. On my VIA C3 with OpenSUSE 11.0 RC1 Gnome Live i386 I don't get graphical boot, plus nothing happens after the Kernel message: "Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 1440k".
