[Bug 650011] New: System crash when configuring realtek 8185L pci wireless card
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=650011 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=650011#c0 Summary: System crash when configuring realtek 8185L pci wireless card Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: superduke@libero.it QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=397650) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=397650) Some og my system log User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; it; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 SUSE/3.6.10-0.3.1 Firefox/3.6.10 I discovered the problem installing OpenSuse 11.3 and other Linux distribution such as Fedora, Ubuntu, DreamLinux. All that crashes during the installation. Only when I removed my realtek 8185K wireless pci card the installation ending with success. The fact that all the distribution have the same problem made me think about a kernel regression: how someone in suseitalia.org told me, the module rtl8180 (the driver loaded for my wireless card) should be not aligned with the last kernel. A systematic crash happens when I try to reassemble the card and try to configured it in Yast -> Impostazioni di Rete (I've an italian setup). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Installing OpenSuse (or any other distribution) in a system having the realtek 8185L wireless pci card; or 1. In a system without pci wireless card try to assemble a realteck 8185L pci wireless card and configuring it. Actual Results: The system crash, have to reboot. Expected Results: I'd like the wireless card working fine with a good module :-) Looking on my system log, play attention because I tried plug and unplug several time the wireless pci card. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, never ever pack up the logs, it's pain for us to extract them.
I don't see any crash in dmesg. Could you setup kdump, serial or network console or try to reproduce on console tty0 (ctrl+alt+f1) and grab a photo? Sorry, but someone told me to pack log because bugzilla have a limit in the file size. You can't see any crash in the log because when crashes the system is dead and can't write anything in the dmesg. That's because I can't grab a photo after crases, the only thing I can do is reboot using computer start botton.

Once again, one of the following should work: (In reply to comment #3)

It indeed won't write anything to /var/log/messages. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When force to reboot, I don't find anything in /var/crash.
Then it seems not to crash, rather it hangs. Do keyboard LEDs blink hen this happens?
I don't know what to do in tty0, because I don'n know how to configure the wireles card with the command line. I use Yast -> Network Manager to do that.
Either run yast on console (it has a text interface too), or switch to console and log into the machine via ssh -X from another machine and run yast on the second machine (i.e. over ssh). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, no led blinking, all system dead.

Repeat: I'm a beginner, I don't know how to use Yast by text interface, and unfortunately I've not a linux network at home. You got to tell me step by step what I got to do, I'm sorry. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Oooook Mr Slaby! I was able to run Yast in tty0 and tring to setup the wireless from there (it was very easy actually, just typing yast in the command line :D ), but the result is always the same: system hangs, no keybord led blinking, even ctrl + alt + del doesn't work, only the computer start button. kdump can't log anything. The problem occurs when from Yast -> Network Devices I try to run for Network Settings, the system crash during the process "Detecting Network Devices". Well, I'm ready for the next step! What I got to do?
Yes, it's as easy as that. So before you run yast, run: # klogconsole -l 8 -r 0 # sysctl kernel.sysrq=1 Then, when it hangs, if nothing appears, try to press sysrq+p or sysrq+b (sysrq is alt+print-screen). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

alt+printscreen+p/b is a good stretching for my fingers, but it doesn't work! system still hanging! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, it dies hard then. Michal, what is yast doing during "Detecting Network Devices" in yast -> network devices, please? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think the problem is the driver can't manage conflict with some hardware combinations.
So it seems like a HW problem. Closing as wontfix. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
