[Bug 227390] New: Mouse instability in final stage of install
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227390 Summary: Mouse instability in final stage of install Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: unspecified Platform: i586 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kgoggin@bigpond.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com I've installed openSUSE10.2 GM from the i386 DVD and the mouse became unstable during the Hardware Configuration stage after testing a new monitor resolution in Sax2 (changed from 1280x1024 to 1024x768). By pressing <Tab> to continue without any further modification, the installation completed OK. This was not present in RC1 but may have been in the so called RC2 which we applied as an online update, not as a reinstall, which might explain how this slipped by us all. Note the problem is not in the installed system only in the installation program and is fully reproducible. Hm - side effect from my mouse patch? Stefan, when did the mouse race condition bug fix get in?
Note the problem is not in the installed system only in the installation program and is fully reproducible.
Please test the following: Get into runlevel 3 and start the installation Xserver (as root) X -xf86config xorg.conf.install & sleep 3 && DISPLAY=:0 xterm In the xterm you can start fvwm2& sax2 -r and try to "test" the configuration as before. If this doesn't reproduce the same issue, it's probably unrelated to the patch. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

What do you mean by "unstable"?
Mouse pointer can't be dragged away from bottom l.h. corner of screen for more than a fraction of a second.
Does that mean that it *does* work again after pushing the mouse around a bit? This sounds like the kernel misinterprets the protocol at first and needs some events to trigger again. In that case it could very well be that we cannot fix this at all, if this happens due to the support of new mice that cannot be detected easily.
From memory Sax2 does work OK if I do not test a configuration.
This is in perfect harmony to my estimation.

Ugh. Forgot you should change to runlevel 3 first. Also make sure to type this exactly as written (first one &, then two). No! Once I "test" the chosen monitor resolution the mouse remains unstable until I <tab> to <continue> the installation using the keyboard. The mouse is unusable at this time. However if I DO NOT alter the default monitor resolution all works well. (Sax2 not invoked)

Firstly it is NOT a new mouse (microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1A USB and PS/2 compatable) and Secondly SUSE 10.1 and openSUSE10.2 RC1 had no problem with this mouse. The problem is in openSUSE10.2 GM Installation Program.

fvwm2 doesn't start an Xserver. Never. If I read you correctly, the issue opens up exactly if and only if you press "Test" in sax2. In that particular moment for testing a second Xserver is started. Or did I get this wrong?

Yes. I can now confirm that this same problem exists on this hardware for openSUSE 10.3-Alpha1. Further I can also confirm that this same problem exists for an ECS ELITEGROUP 760GX-M (SIS M760 chipset) mobo and three different types of USB mice in 10.3A1 64 bit version. I believe I have established that:- 1. This is is NOT limited to my particular hardware but is related to USB mice generally. 2. The problem is also in openSUSE10.3 Alpha1 32 & 64 bit versions. I believe this problem would be enough to discourage a first time Linux user from any further consideration of openSUSE. Therefore I ask you to escalate the severity of this problem and do whatever is necessary to ensure it is NOT in openSUSE10.3-GM. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If that doesn't help, I can make RC1 available to you one more time so we can bisect the guilty package. But that is quite some pain so I'll only do that if you're happy to test. We'll have to downgrade packages bit by bit to understand which change imposes the problem. Well, if you already did when reading this message, test first, and then we'll upgrade the packages bit-by-bit :P At first I'd like you to downgrade all xorg-x11* packages. The changes have been minimal, and are ABI compatible, so if rpm complains, you can probably --force --nodeps --oldpackage them ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

rpm -Uhv -force --nodeps <whereever_your_RC1_RPMs_are_located>/xorg-x11*.rpm first and let us know, if this helps. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So this clearly looks like xorg bug instead of kernel bug, right? Mathias, would you accept the bug being reassigned back to you?
I'm not sure, but as long as we haven't figured that out, that's ok with me. Assigning back to me, CC'ing you. (In reply to comment #36)
Sorry for delay I've been busy.
No probs.

With "repeat 1 above" you mean the sax2 Test? Then the issue is still there, and the Xorg packages were not the reason. But why do you state this fixed the problem, when the only case where this problem popped up is still showing the issue?
I will be away for a month from next week, I will be reachable by email but may not be able to do any testing until I return home.
Sure. We'll delay further tests then. The next test would be to replace the kernel package and see whether the issue still pops up. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

With "repeat 1 above" you mean the sax2 Test?
Yes
Then the issue is still there, and the Xorg packages were not the reason.
Not quite, I've repeated this test many times now and the instability is not found on some occasions and is found on other occasions. A seemingly random result.
But why do you state this fixed the problem, when the only case where this problem popped up is still showing the issue?
Because right at the beginning I said this problem was fully reproducible (every time) and now it's not. I concede "fixed" is too strong a word but downgrading all xorg.x11 packages has clearly had an effect. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I suggest to update the xorg-x11* packages from RC1 to GM one-by-one to figure out, which package you think is responsible for the regression.
