[Bug 558488] New: Network card fails to connect on eth0 after initial installation.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=558488 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=558488#c0 Summary: Network card fails to connect on eth0 after initial installation. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hjroussel@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091103 SUSE/3.5.5-2.1 Firefox/3.5.5 When installing openSuse 11.2 on a Shuttle SG31G2, I initially had success with establishing an ethernet connection to a RCA cable modem. In the initial install I selected ext4 for the OS install partition and ext3 for the /home partition (openSuse 11.1 was previously installed). I had issues with software running smoothly with this setup. Therefore, I reinstalled the OS with ext4 for both partitions using auto install. In the install screen my connected PCI ethernet adapter, NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100, successfully recognized the system time from an external server when configuring the time zone. However, when the system booted for the first time I could not connect online. I have this issue from time to time. Usually I reboot once and everything works correctly. This time I tried rebooting several times and connecting the ethernet cord into the on-board ethernet (88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller). All was for naught. So I reinstalled openSUSE 11.2 32-bit in manual install mode with the ethernet connected into the on-board ethernet. This time the system time could not recognize the server to pull the time from in the timezone screen. Later in the install during the configuration of network devices the on-board ethernet still refused to connect during the attempt to connect. The error that came back was to the effect "Client is already running on eth0." Then, I went back to the network setup and disabled both devices. Next I enabled them both with the PCI ethernet card being enabled first and the on-board ethernet being enabled second. Both had DHCP4 configured. Et voilà, the on-board ethernet in eth1 connected smoothly to the cable modem and obtained an IP address. It continues to work properly to this day. Previously, I was never successful at setting up the on-board ethernet. One problem could be "LLADDR":"00:30:1b:81:b4:42" parameter in your configuration. Could you attach /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-* your configuration? And when you comment this option and do "rcnetwork restart" it works fine?

Could you explain in more detail on what you mean by "comment this option"? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Maybe there's some conflict? You can try following: - stop the network "rcnetwork stop" - try first interface "dhcpcd-test eth0" - then try second interface "dhcpcd-test eth1" - in YaST configure only device that has dhcp response And write result here, please -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

eth0 is the NC10/100 card; it timed out with the RC45 cord connected. eth1 is the on-board ethernet; it successfully established a connection. I configured eth1 in Yast and ethernet successfully connects. On an interesting side note: I was wont to having problems with the 10/100 adapter connecting maybe 1/10 boot cycles. With the on-board ethernet, I have connected successfully every time. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What kind of problem? Is that configuration proposed by YaST? Or some kernel problem? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
