[Bug 666632] New: X hangs very often on some random user action
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=666632 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=666632#c0 Summary: X hangs very often on some random user action Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: benderamp@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=409849) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=409849) Xorg.0.log.old User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b8) Gecko/20101214 Firefox/4.0b8 I have xorg 7.6 from opensuse factory, ATI r600 card with opensource driver. The system freezes on some random user action, which is going to take some cpu - open web page with flash, launch google chrome, create new tab in google chrome, launch konqueror, switch desktop etc. System hangs - the picture freezes, mouse does not work, keyboard indicators do not work, ctrl+alt+del do not work. Alt+SysRq+B to reboot works, also everything under X also work - for example the music would continue to play even when desktop is freezed, after reboot log file /var/log/messages also has entries with timestamp later than freeze. This happens _very_ often - many times a day. Actually, I am afraid to open each new web page, switch desktop of launch some new app, because this might cause the freeze with high probability. If I don't do such things (just scroll the browser down and read some text inside one app), the freeze most likely would not happen. Also sometimes all desktop might freeze for a second or two, but then it gets released. Also sometimes before the freeze the mouse starts to move with hitches for a second or two and then the whole desktop hangs. After rebooting after next hang I have noted, that Xorg.0.log.old contains additional lines: After most of hangs /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old has the lines at the end: [ 7962.887] [mi] EQ overf[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. I have also reported the bug at X.org (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33146), but as soon as this might be a combination of many system circumstances, also report it here. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Work on the desktop for a while 2. Launch google chrome, switch desktop. open page with flash or js etc Actual Results: The system hangs forever Expected Results: The system should not hang -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Also there were no hangs for several hours - usually I could get them each 30mins-1hour if did not try to work accurately (don't open extra web pages, don't start extra programs etc). There is no 3D without KMS though, so hope this workaround is temporary. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, my guess is that having 3D enabled is the culprit here. Closing as upstream. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have updated kernel to 2.6.38-rc2-1-desktop (I had 2.6.37 before) from factory and things seem to work fine now even with KMS on. From time to time I receive a relatively long (2-3 seconds) freeze - it gives an impression of exactly same situation as before, but then things continue to work again - it would have stuck for forever before the update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=666632 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=666632#c6 --- Comment #6 from Anton Moiseev <benderamp@gmail.com> 2011-02-05 08:39:24 UTC --- Unfortunately I was wrong - the hangs continued to appear the next day as they did before. Also I have received the same hang even with kernel booted with nomodeset option - started to write 800mb meego image to the flash drive with dd command - desktop hanged after few seconds, though the music continued to play in the headphones. After reboot cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old gives same messages: [ 8505.237] (II) XKB: reuse xkmfile /var/lib/xkb/compiled/server-4537D305C4DF952C1DF1981D1DA5AE65FFC47998.xkm [ 43852.233] (II) XKB: reuse xkmfile /var/lib/xkb/compiled/server-4537D305C4DF952C1DF1981D1DA5AE65FFC47998.xkm [ 44177.921] [mi] EQ overf[mi] EQ overflowing. Started to copy files - hang, reboot, start to copy same files again - hang again. Most likely the hang would happen the 3rd time if I try, so this might be a good way to reproduce this. KMS was disabled. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
