[Bug 726019] New: Existing partitions not auto-mounted, installation doesn't even ask about it
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726019 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726019#c0 Summary: Existing partitions not auto-mounted, installation doesn't even ask about it Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: roland@logikalsolutions.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 Create multiple EXT3 and EXT4 partitions for things like "books" "save_sets" etc. Perform installation taking defaults. None of these partitions have mount points defined when installation is complete. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.see above 2. 3. Actual Results: have to manually mount as root/administrator. Disk utility listed in Applications will not allow partitions to be mounted or added to FSTAB. You have to use the much more dangerous Partition Creator in YAST. Expected Results: Partitions should be automatically mounted with mount points that match their labels. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So when someone does not assign a mount point, the corresponding device does not get mounted. Especially people having different installations on the same system may want the data separated from each other. Also use of label by different people is not consistent. So I would assume lots of people would not like this approach very much. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

These partitions existed from a prior version of OpenSuSE and were not created during this installation. 2) There are many messages on the OpenSuSE forums bitching about this very bug. 3) Those people who use labels are quite consistent about it. 4) When the installation procedure runs, it should ASK about a mount point for each partition it identifies and let the user decide, not ASS-U-ME. 5) Your argument is really inconsistent with reality when you auto-mount WINDOWS/C and WINDOWS/D for any NTFS or FAT-32 partitions found, especially since most of us don't have a single Windows installation. If anything they should be DOS/C and DOS/D or simply DRIVE_C and DRIVE_D. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am responsible for YaST2 partitioner. I did not change anything in this regard since last release. Maybe previously the automounting you mention was done by tools integrated into Gnome or KDE desktop. I wondered what Program was meant with "Disk utility listed in Applications" in first Report anyway. Could you please check which program is really executed by clicking this "Disk utility". Previously it identified and mounted ALL existing partitions. Now it does not. I have no method of identifying the "Disk Utility". Under Gnome 12.1 RC 1, you click on Activities. Since you mentioned in comment#4 it worked in previous releases, it should not be fstab related since to my knowledge we never created an fstab with entries for all existing partitions. So if the behavior you want was present in former releases there seems to be way of getting what you want without adding all partitions to fstab. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We never automatically added all partitions to /etc/fstab and also did not query users for every existing partitions during installation. And of course one can manually add all partition one wants to fstab with yast2 partitioner which makes the fielsystems to be mounted automatically at system startup. ad comment#11: I cannot conclude from the discussion that people want automatically added every partition to /etc/fstab. Please understand that such fundamental changes cannot be done without some coordination (and these coordination is done with feature requests). If I would implement it the way you want just to get rid of this bug and next release someone else complains that the previous method was superior. What to do then? Undo the change? Then you will complain again. So with some things it is simply not possible to make everyone happy. So I still think this should be handled as a feature request, not a bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This install, for whatever reason, most likely some poorly thought out change request without query for user input, has changed that behavior. I'm not the only one to notice this. It is NOT a feature request. Whatever took out the mounting WAS a feature request which obviously wasn't voted on by anyone or we wouldn't have this bug. This is definitely a bug. It is most likely the result of an "undocumented feature" added by a developer who thought they "knew better" about how install should work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If so, allow them to provide the mount point. This satisfies all. The installation can then, by default, continue down this misguided and unenlightened path of ignoring all other partitions, then the little self contained step can ask about them all. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am now testing RC2 and using KDE because Gnome is simply unusable. The problem is neither Gnome nor KDE. The problem is the installation process and what it chooses to create FSTAB entries for on its own and the seemingly random logic behind it. Everybody has tried to glad-hand this off to someone else.
