[Bug 678653] New: systemd: agetty vs mingetty
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678653 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678653#c0 Summary: systemd: agetty vs mingetty Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: kasievers@novell.com ReportedBy: jengelh@medozas.de QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: werner@novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- SUSE's sysvinit by default used mingetty, now when one switches to systemd, agetty is suddenly used. One of the getty implementations seems redundant and could be removed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Werner is on Cc since he is listed as maintainer of the sysvinit and mingetty packages, and would know which getty implementation should be used for the system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And there are a lot of features, beside UTF-8 support for login names over ldap. The quesion is why upstream of systemd seems to ignore the majority decisions done by the maintainers of a distribution. And indeed the choose of mingetty was a majority decision a few years back due to the lack of features of agetty. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678653 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678653#c4 --- Comment #4 from Jan Engelhardt <jengelh@medozas.de> 2011-03-15 11:05:27 UTC --- The mingetty manpage says nothing of UTF-8 support. So this feature is practically not advertised. Also see http://bugs.debian.org/mingetty while at it. And the most important reason I could think of why nobody except openSUSE uses mingetty would be what is actually stated in its manpage: "mingetty does not support serial lines". Heck, even openSUSE uses agetty in sysvinit for ttyS0 because of that. And, I suppose, few people like to carry around more than one getty implementation. What other features does agetty lack? A clear comparative table would be of use. What is the state of the mingetty project at SF, is it even authoritative, or does openSUSE run sort a fork? (Because mingetty.sf release seems to not receive much attention.) All these questions would come to my mind if I were a bystander having to decide on agetty vs mingetty. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The mingettycw is/was also used by RedHat REL for other features read the manual pages of mingetty and compare with agetty ... Missed features: --noclear --noreset --nonewline --noissue --nohangup --no-hostname --long-hostname --logopts --nice --delay --chdir --chroot --autologin --loginpause .. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's also on the util-linux TODO list. Would be great if you can let the util-linux guys know the list of missing *useful* features. Some things in the list above really don't look like they fit that criteria. If you really need exotic mingetty features, which are not accepted in agetty, you can always create an optional package that overwrites the default agetty setup with /dev/null links and places mingetty there. But none of that should be in the default setup, in the systemd package, or differ from upstream, instead upstream agetty should be extended if needed. Major goal of systemd is to unify across the distributions, and get rid of needless differences, and get things maintained centrally and not in the distro packages. Just in case you want to change anything here now, please direct that to upstream agetty or systemd and get it changed for all distros and not the SUSE package of systemd. SUSE will stay as close as possible to upsream. Hope that clarifies. Things like that are seriously not *features* we are looking for. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
