What did you do since https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256673#c7 Does the cupsd run? What results lpstat -r and lpstat -h localhost -r and rccups status See http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell "If problems are encountered": 1. Set the "LogLevel debug" in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. 2. Stop cupsd. 3. Move /var/log/cups/error_log* to another location (or delete it) in order to avoid having to search through gigantic log files. 4. Start cupsd. 5. Retry the action leading to the problem. 6. Now /var/log/cups/error_log contains many messages that are useful for troubleshooting. Attach /var/log/cups/error_log as mime type text/plain to this bug. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=258213 ------- Comment #3 from jim.asbille@gmail.com 2007-03-28 07:18 MST ------- This is not the same instance. The previous bug was on the same computer but different hard drive. I was testing to find and eliminate issues before installing on my main hard drive. The last problem was Filters not being installed. On this install I seem to have a problem with Cups Server not running. The printer and all hardware are the same (except for HD). HP DeskJet 720c. I am dead in the water, I have no printer. I am seeing a lot of opensuse 10.2 issues with Cups on the Internet and in this list. I am not sure where to go here, I need 10.2 to recognize my widescreen monitor, thats why I went from 10.0 to 10.2. This setup is a 80gb HD with Windows on hda1. -------------------------------------------------------------------- When changed hardware makes a difference, it doesn't look like a problem in the CUPS software ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=258213 jsmeix@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|ASSIGNED |RESOLVED Resolution| |WORKSFORME ------- Comment #22 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-04-11 03:54 MST ------- In attachment #129516 there are many entries like ----------------------------------------------------------------------- E ... (/usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel) stopped with status 1! E ... Unable to open parallel port device file "/dev/lp0": Permission denied ----------------------------------------------------------------------- which indicates a problem with the parallel port device node and not with CUPS. There are some bug reports about problems with the parallel port in our Novell/Suse Bugzilla. A good report to start is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=185135 See also the other bug reports which are mentioned there. The current workaround is to experiment with various BIOS settings and explicite additional settings in /etc/modprobe.conf to find a setup, which actually works in a particular problematic case. Note that a PPA printer cannot print plain text directly so that a command like echo -en "\rHello\r\f" >/dev/lp0 must work without error-message (watch "dmesg" and /var/log/messages) but a PPA printer would not print anything. I guess something regarding the parallel port was messed up during the one installation of the operating system and after the clean new installation the parallel port stuff works. All in all the various different errors together with the harddisk stuff seem to indicate that your hardware might be somewhat unstable which leads to various different unexpected and unreproducilbe problems. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=258213 ------- Comment #23 from jim.asbille@gmail.com 2007-04-11 07:31 MST ------- Thanks for the final analysis. I believe you are correct. I had several messages related to the parallel port being busy. My Mobo is seven years old and the rest of my hardware ranges from seven years to 1 month. The clean install seems to have resolved any issues. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
