The new way is running "sudo pip install ." in the git root where the pyproject.toml is. This however doesn't work because it is broken in the currently newest packaged version of python3-pip (22.0.4) - the issue doesn't happen eg. in an archlinux container with pip 22.3.1: sudo pip install .
