[Bug 849753] New: SATA Hotplug not working correctly / full system lockup
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849753 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=849753#c0 Summary: SATA Hotplug not working correctly / full system lockup Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mantel@suse.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: Development Blocker: --- I'm using SATA hotplug since years for backup purposes. After I built a new system this does no longer work correctly: I inserted a harddisk into the tray and issued something like echo - - - > /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/scan but the disk is not detected. I double checked cabling and tested with various disks, but always the same result. Finally I tested what happens when a disk is present during boot. And voila, disk is detected and I can even change the disk and it gets detected correctly after issuing above command. Of course I can live with this restriction, but being able to add a disk while the system is running provides much more flexibility. And it is even vital for producers of NAS systems like Qnap (who offer the possibility of expanding storage). After removing the last backup disk I wanted to notify the system about the removal of the disk, so I issued the command echo 1 > /sys/block/sdc/device/delete After a few seconds the system locked up totally, switched back to console and the keyboard LEDs started to blink. The panic message was not logged into the syslog, so I cannot provide it. If it is useful, I could reproduce it and use a camera to catch it. But the last messages clearly indicated that it was related to the ATA subsystem. Please note that I definitely used the correct device, as I still had some seconds before the lockup and "lsscsi" clearly told me that the correct disk had been removed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
