... There are two SATA ports and 2 pairs of PATA ports. There are devices attached to the two SATA ports and the first pair of PATA ports. The second pair of PATA ports is disabled.
AFAIK my computer have two SATA and only _one_ PATA port(s). On the PATA port is a DVD-ROM and a DVD-Writer attached. The second pair has to be disabled because there is only one PATA port available on the motherboard. There is only one internal hard disk connected to one SATA port and the external eSATA to the other. But I not 100% sure. I could check this later.
If there is a SATA controller in the system with ports that don't have devices attached, you'd see a message like this (from one of my systems): scsi2 : sata_promise ata3: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 0)
Is this a message which is printed in boot.msg?
This may be a silly question, but are you certain the eSATA connector is attached to a working port? Perhaps the external port is connected to a port that can be used both internally or externally, and it's already used internally?
Yes, I am 100% sure, because there is also Windows Vista installed and the external eSATA HD works fine on Vista. FYI: I had problems to install SuSE 10.3 (Beta) on this machine primarily. The install program did not recognize even the internal SATA harddisk. I committed a bug report [Bug 309069] and your colleagues solved the problem. Maybe this could help you to fix this problem.
