http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=595569 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=595569#c0 Summary: Release Notes: Document changes in X.Org configuration due to KMS Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: ASSIGNED Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Release Notes AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: sndirsch@novell.com QAContact: coolo@novell.com CC: eich@novell.com, mhopf@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- We should document in the release notes that KMS is now our default for intel, ATI and nvidia. And how to switch back to radeonhd/nv or use fbdev on intel, i.e how to disable KMS. Basically it's setting NO_KMS_IN_INITRD="yes" in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and running mkinitrd (if you don't use the sysconfig editor of YaST). And add the device ID to /etc/X11/kms-blacklist.local. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And add the device ID to /etc/X11/kms-blacklist.local.
The KMS blacklist framework has been removed again. Just mention kernel boot option 'nomodeset' instead. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On Intel without KMS the Xserver falls back to "fbdev" driver ("intel" only supports KMS). On ATI for current GPUs it falls back to "radeonhd". On NVIDIA with KMS the "nv" driver is used ("nouveau" only supports KMS).

Proposal:
KMS on openSUSE 11.3 -------------------- With openSUSE 11.3 we're switching to KMS (=Kernel mode switching) for Intel,
mode setting
ATI and NVIDIA graphics, so this is our default now. If you see any problems with the KMS driver support (intel, radeon, nouveau), you can disable KMS by specifying 'nomodeset' on the kernel boot command line. Set it permanently by
adding 'nomodeset' to the kernel boot command line. To set this permanently you may add it to the kernel command line in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
adding it to /boot/grub/menu.lst. This option makes sure the appropriate kernel module (intel, radeon, nouveau) is loaded with option 'modeset=0' in initrd, i.e. KMS is disabled.
In the rare cases where loading the DRM module in initrd is a general problem ^^^^^ from
(unrelated to KMS) it is even possbile to disable loading of the DRM module ^^^^^^^^ possible in initrd completely. For this set the sysconfig variable NO_KMS_IN_INITRD to "yes" via YAST, which then recreates initrd afterwards. Reboot your machine.
On Intel without KMS the Xserver falls back to "fbdev" driver ("intel" only ^^^^ the supports KMS). On ATI for current GPUs it falls back to "radeonhd". On NVIDIA with KMS the "nv" driver is used ("nouveau" only supports KMS). ^^^^out
