[Bug 279865] New: rpmlint warns about unstripped binaries
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279865 Summary: rpmlint warns about unstripped binaries Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: dmueller@novell.com ReportedBy: coolo@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de when you use build without --debug, the binaries are striped but the symbols are left in - this gives a warning and might make people think they should strip in the spec file. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279865 ------- Comment #1 from dmueller@novell.com 2007-06-01 03:07 MST ------- my initial plan was to discuss with autobuild team if the default of build couldn't be fixed. alternatively I could add a small patch that suppresses this particular check if the package is build with build. I'll look. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I guess the correct fix is not relying on file's logic what is a stripped binary and what isn't. I myself would define an unstripped binary as one that has .debug sections - but perhaps Andreas or Michael have something to add. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279865 ------- Comment #3 from dmueller@novell.com 2007-06-01 03:22 MST ------- the people using rpmbuild or build service will not get the rpmlint warnings. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279865 ------- Comment #4 from coolo@novell.com 2007-06-01 03:25 MST ------- what stops you from using rpmlint on rpms generated whatever way? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279865 ------- Comment #5 from dmueller@novell.com 2007-06-01 03:26 MST ------- The way you define is not how file(1) defines if a binary is stripped. for file, a (non-dynamic) symbol table defines wether or not the binary is stripped. This means also that debug-stripped binaries will still be unstripped. Changing the check would disqualify its purpose: The purpose is to find packages where the brp-strip script is not running (yes, there are such!) or where the debuginfo package isn't created due to packaging bugs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

A simple solution would be to improve the documentation of the check, to make sure that packagers which read the check will understand what is going on. I'll add a section to the wiki. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
